Whats the biggest tire you can run on a 9.5" rim?

I figured with all the car guys(and gals) here, someone may know this. Im looking to see if you can safely run a 295/40 on a 9.5" rim. It would be a street tire, and street driven.

No, its not for the Viper, but like I said, you guys are a great knowledge base. :D

Edit: Its for a 94 Supra. 18" Rims.

Probably need to be more specific in order to get more help. What diameter is the wheel? What vehicle is it going on? I would have to say that a 295 tire would be fine for a 9.5 inch wide wheel.

For instance, I'm running 305/50R20's on 20x9 rims on my Denali. Its actually too much tire for the rim, but looks good. It gives it that Nascar fat tire look. No rubbing.
