Why doesn\'t oil leak from the main cap crossbolts?

There's nothing in the service manual about any kind of gasket material or O ring for the cross bolts.

Is it just the close tolerance fit of the main cap into the block and the compression of that tolerance when the cross bolts are tightened that prevents any oil from seeping out?

Thanks :)

I don't know the answer but if it's was me I'd put some thread sealer or black silicone on the bolts during assembly!!!!!

.......... or, you could bypass that step and go with the hammer!!!! :D

.. I just thought someone who's had one that far apart could tell me if there is any type of sealant not called for in the service manual.

If there isn't, then it has to be the tight machined clearances of the main caps.

A small amount of sealant could only help and not hurt the car. Just go buy some $5 sealen from PepBoys or even Walmart...Should provide that extra bit of security you're looking for.

I agree, a good black silicone would be what I would use. DC mechs use something like that I'm sure. Wouldn't take a chance on leakin' and have to take it apart again.

Thanks for the sealant tips, but mine isn't apart, and I don't plan on taking it apart.

I just wondered it there's anything more than metal to metal contact sealing the bolts as delivered from the factory.
