Wall-St .Jrnl (again) Says Viper Cancelled!

We have all heard this before, but I hope that TODAYS {10/27/09} article may be citing old research. Says that Sebring, Grand Caravan, Compass, Commander, Avenger, Dakota, 2011 Viper are all OUT.... and a couple Fiat micro-cars are IN.

How many times can Viper expire? Im sure we'll all hear more VERY soon.......by 11/4!
Im staying positive......

There's a big announcement from CEO Sergio coming on Nov. 4 about the future of Chrysler. Stay tuned.

Good lord would they make up their mind! :brick:

I think Viper was from old research.

As for popular vehicles like Grand Caravan, etc, that would be a stupid move.

Anyone else think that a number of the Alfa's take their design cues from fresh water fish? What the hell are they thinking? :dunno:

If this is the future of the American auto industry, used car values should start to rise in no time.

Not to worry, the WSJ is owned by Rupert Murdoch(owner of FOX Network) so anything that gets reported by them is not actually NEWS and therefor can not be true:smirk:

:omg: Stories like this can do nothing but harm the motor industry :(
Its bad enough for families involved in the industry to hear this stuff from outside media, It can do nothing but unstabilize an already suffering car company. Its only fair that this sort of information should go out to employees first and NOT the general media. It will do nothing for sales what so ever

I hope the story's NOT true, As for Alphas, Cant stand the bloody things. Best place for them is the crusher

America Rocks :2tu:

For what it's worth (and for those that don't read German, Mr. Baz) that article identifies a Viper only among the photos of cars that are to be "subtracted from the lineup" in 2011. The Viper is never mentioned (as are the other cars) in the text article itself.

I had the good fortune to drive a newer model Alfa-Romeo last trip to Germany. Drove it all around Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

It was a pretty fun car, but really nothing special. Felt like a typical rental car. Manual transmission was fun, but the engine had little torque.

Not really sure it would make a huge splash in USA. Maybe more of a niche vehicle for the mechanically adventurous.

Viper is an ICON. Most of the people I talk to that are hesitant to buy a new one are more concerned about the availability of a local dealership for warranty work, or the access to a well trained and experienced ViperTech, than any hesitation about the car.

The Viper is still a fantastic car that holds its own against almost anything, but the dealer/service network has been severly wounded.

IF Dodge is going to produce it, they should also make the commitment to support it.

This is getting really OLD although the entire industry makes no sense. I kept waiting for the 2010 Escalade for my wife and had to buy an 09 cause they still have not started building 10s (they usually start in July)

I don't have good feelings about this. If it happens it has been a nice run and I will keep my 92 and 09 as bookends and sell the 06--and get that ZR-1 I have been eyeing (heresy, I know) But, it won't be a Viper.

This is a rough translation of the opening paragraph-

The Dodge viper is history. Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne stops the production of the American cult supersports car. And not only that. Marchionne paints the model palette of Chrysler, Dodge and jeep radically together.

The article in question is a front page article on the WSJ. I agree with most of the cars on the list. The Viper is not mentioned in the article but it is in the photo lineup.

What we need to keep the Viper brand going is to buy the cars. Petitions will not cut it. Fiat has said they don't intend infusing any money into Chrysler. But if a car shows sales, then it will be produced. Unfortunately for the Viper, it looks like that is not happening. So if you know friends who are in the market, buy them a few drinks and talk to them about the merits of a Viper and the VCA.

If the Viper does die, then for those of us who are already owners, the brand will only appreciate with time, especially the Gen IIs.

These articles really should not suprise anyone..I think Fiats intention was to sell and if not milk what they could out of the Viper for a year or two..
Conner has been up and down since the whole BK and vendor situation and quality and production has been an issue.....Martin FINALLY had his ACR delivered to his dealer 2 weeks ago....it was BUILT,DONE,FINISHED in JUNE!!!!!! My ACR just came in to the dealership this morning after Reliable told them it was shipped twice in the last 2 weeks!!!! IF they cant even get SOLD order cars delivered in a timely manner what does that say about the whole situation...Add to the fact that these are 100K cars NOT Priuses and its just sad..:( I have to decide today wheather I still want my ACR as I sit and watch heavy snow coming down.:( We are supposed to get about 2 feet today and tomorrow:omg: I was told someone else will take it if I dont want it....Kevin

Lorenzo, I found it and read it again on line but I can't post the link

I read this at lunch today, as stated no written reference to the viper only a picture. When you read it, dropping the viper seems counter to what they and the outside community believe is their future, i.e. "Mr Marchionne appears to be creating a lineup that stays true to Chrysler's strenghts in blue-collar muscle cars and pickup trucks" or an industry writer " I like that plan a lot. Dodge can be the performance brand."

We find out more on 11/4

Here's a google translation of the article, in German, that Baz posted a link to above, which is supposed to be the WSJ article:

The Dodge Viper is history. Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne is a production of the American cult of super-sports car. And not only that. Marchionne deletes the range of models from Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep together radically. Instead, the Fiat boss with Italian cars and brands, the Americans want to lead from the crisis. Alfa Romeo is to judge it.
HB MILAN / FRANKFURT. The rescue plan for Chrysler, which will introduce the Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne on Wednesday in Detroit to take shape. In the U.S. resulting from the insolvency carmaker Chrysler is following the entry of the Italian rival Fiat a radical transformation of the model range bring the change. In 2011, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the small car 500 in the U.S. come to the market and 2012 will follow different Alfa Romeo models. It was planned to continue producing vehicles in the U.S. and Mexico. Chrysler's Dodge brand on the other hand, the production of individual models completely inapplicable.
Fiat was entered four months ago as a savior at Chrysler and has medium-term option, the majority of the ailing company to take over. Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has however already today as CEO of Chrysler is in charge. The Italian-American is known as a turnaround specialist and has been returned to the Italian car company Fiat declared dead within a few years in the profit zone.
Fiat had retreated to the mid-90s from the U.S. market, where volumes only offered sports cars such as Ferrari and Maserati. Now the two automakers, according to work "WSJE" for new vehicles for the U.S. market. The first was to 2012, a mid-size car based on Fiat under the Chrysler label on the market.
The Alfa Romeo models will be produced entirely in North America. Besides the new compact car Alfa Mito middle Milano and another mid-size car to be built in the USA. Later on Fiat platform to bring Chrysler also include three new models on the market: a midsize car, and a small car, the 2012 will come on the market, and a small jeep, one or two years.
Marchionne to intervene dramatically in the Dodge brand seems. There, the Caliber compact car is completely stopped, just like the Nitro SUV and Avenger mid-size model. The retro design for its popular Chrysler PT Cruiser and the Jeep Commander SUV, Compass and Patriot are the medium for information of the Wall Street Journal no longer be offered.
With the new strategy for Chrysler Marchionne wants to continue while serving customers in the lower middle class, but it is also more challenging to warm Americans to European models.
Fiat has not confirmed the report. But even in Italy, the first leaks are known. According to a report by the business newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore is the retro-compact car 500 at the Chrysler plants in Canada are produced in Mexico and not, as the Wall Street Journal writes with regard to people familiar with the situation.
To grab the renovation in 2012 lie, but a barren spell in front of the government-backed car maker, writes the WSJE. In September, the U.S. market share had shrunk by more than eleven percent of Chrysler last year to just over eight percent.
In fact, the situation in Detroit seem far more dramatic is meant to be. After months of intensive work in the Detroit headquarters Marchionne verdict was a sobering effect on the IAA motor show in Frankfurt: "We were surprised at how little has been done in the past 24 months."
Thus, the Fiat boss, the first gloomy rumors had confirmed that leaked several weeks of dealing with the rehabilitation counselors and Fiat executives. Accordingly, in the course of all the restructuring, the first with Daimler Chrysler and go through with Cerberus and suffered to leave, thousands of engineers and developers to the company. The upshot: the much-needed upgrade of the product portfolio will take longer than the Marchionne has been assumed. Exactly Marchionne now takes extensive back on Fiat products for Chrysler.
How bad the situation is in this existential point for Chrysler, was shown at the IAA. There was standing alone and leave only one relevant innovation: namely, a heavily reworked Dodge Caliber, have missed the mother's Chrysler Group, in collaboration with Fiat aufgehübschten one interior and a new diesel engine. That must be enough. In Europe, it does so not.

Why do we continue to let the European companies (no offense to our European friends :D :D ) come in, take over and destroy what was strong american companies?! :( The Daimler merger was the worst mistake ever concocted by the American car industry!:mad:

Folks, having been on the phone with several of our friends in Detroit today I think it is important to step back and let the official announcements be made when they are official. Note that the last official comment on the Viper was that it was renewed and Dodge was excited to continue building it. Also note that you have an incredible guy at the helm of Dodge, one who came to Chrysler because of his excitement about the Viper. More than just about anybody I have ever met - he gets it. And don't forget that the new ownership knows a thing or two about limited exotic cars, so I think that we may be worked up over something that could very well be a non-issue. I think the next twelve months will be very, very exciting indeed.

I think something is lost in translation.

"Stops The Production" is what we already know. Viper production IS stopped, and not scheduled to resume until 2010 models in the Spring. [CAAP activity is to finish 09 models.]

My first car was a 1961 Fiat 1100..... I am infused with Car-Karma. Mr. Sergio has already shown us his wisdom by his love of 500+ HP supercars on both sides of the pond, and his recent Dodge CEO appointment of Mr. Gilles. That ONE move is, in my opinion, the best news for Viper in years.... I have positive feelings about Viper beyond 2010.

Big Viper dates: 10/30/09 Raffle; 11/04/09 Sergio's "translation" announcement; Jan 2010 N.A.I.Auto Show; Spring 2010 CAAP produces MY 2010.

+1, Chris!
Before we get too upset with all the rumors flying around, let's remember that Sergio Marchionne has a "major announcement" scheduled for next Wednesday (Nov. 4). I think we ought to wait and see what he says, rather than jump to conclusions based on media speculation. Meanwhile, let's not hold the funeral (or a wake) before we have a corpse.
