I was out with the local Italian clubs this weekend for their annual Le Belle Macchine d’Italia Sud – Daytona. I had an absolute blast!! This was the first time I had really track my car and man this thing was built for this stuff. I was scared @ first since I lack ABS and just from everyone telling me how dangerous the car is on this track. I was put in the white group so on Fri. I mostly got comfy with the car and followed some different people trying different lines. Sat. was where the real fun was. As I got more comfotable with the car I got going faster and faster. I started passing my friends who'd I'd gone with and just about everyone in our group. Then Valentino Balboni (Lambo's test driver of like 25 years) came out during our session as he was giving people rides all weekend. I saw him come out behind me so I immed. pulled over to let him pass. Then I stayed on his rear for two laps watching his lines. Wow, I was moving during this session. I hit 180mph on the tri-ovaland was timed @ 2:11. After this I was using those lines the rest of my sessions. Sat. afternoon I started losing my breaks and things got a little scary. I have a Stoptech BBK, lines, deflectors but it just wasn't enough to be stopping from those speeds. I swapped pads on Sun. morn. hoping it would help. I could get about 3-4 laps in oand then they would just fade out. So I'd come in. Gonna have to do some upgrades (cooling ducts) before next year. On to the pics!!

Some other cars that were out there

I got a ride in this with Valentino but a cam sensor went bad so we hoped out after 2 laps and jumped in his LP550-2 he helped design

Derek Bell was also out this weekend drving these around

Passed this twice, kinda scary as you worried that a million+ car is next to you

2:11 great job! There is another Daytona event the first week of December but I don't remember the club.

Thanks Chuck, I'm not going back till I get the brake situation figured out. I'm going to Robling in Jan. but the speeds aren't as fast from what I understand so I hope it's not an issue again. On Fri I was only hitting 165ish and it wasn't an issue. Once I started going faster they went out.

Wow, nice job and great pics. I have always wanted to drive on that track. 180? That is about top speed for your car, no?

Actually, that was staying in 5th @ around 5500-6000 rpm's. I have a 3.45 rear gear. I tried shifting into 6th twice and didn't like the way it felt.

You should come out next year.

Very nice shots on the track. The first one turned out the best of the bunch I think.

Thank you for posting them.

Pretty pics!

For reference, when we were there with ViperDays/PBOC 2 weeks ago, the lead Vipers (Keating and Stout in Comp Coupes) wee running 1:53's... These cars are amazing!

LOL, if you think you were scared next to the Buggati or Enzo, imagine how he must have felt! He has some balls to take that thing out on the track with John Q Public...must be a dealer loaner.

Nice pics. Keep up the good driving! Brake ducts are a must. Don't rely on Porsche deflectors either.

If I remember correctly, the round fog light opening was for brake cooling if the lights were removed. Am I just having a bad flashback or is that the case on the GTSs?

It wasn't really an open invitaion event but I know what you mean. The Veyron actually ran off in the infield on his own but didn't do any damaged to anything. There were no major accidents (just a couple of runoffs) and everyone was very well behaved. Last year @ this event an MC-12 was pretty much totalled :(

Very cool, wish I was there! I would have paid to see the Veyron up close. Do you know what kind of speeds/times the Veyron was doing? I will have one of those after I win the lottery.

I'm amazed at the difference between how your brakes handle on the street and then at Daytona. I wouldn't think it would be that big a deal, but evidently the heat caused by running at those speeds has a huge impact. Learn something new everyday.

Great pics :2tu: Daytona too :headbang:

So were you just using the outside oval or were you using the infield too? Looks like a blast, and no rain :2tu:

I know what you mean about brake fade, I had the same thing happen to me on a test track. Some interesting stuff on the link below, its worth a read :)

We were using the full rolex course. I believe I was boiling my brake fluid and overheating everything. I ordered some ducting and some Castrol SRF yesterday.

That picture of Derrick Bells car is his personal driver too. I saw him in the parking lot with it at the Rolex last year. Love that F40 pix.
