Yeah, I just saw the magazine on the shelf yesterday and took a peek as well. Call me skeptical. I'd like to think Dodge would know better. I could see a new halo car coming out, but I don't think they could call it a Viper and get away with it without a V10. Maybe, but I think they might think of a different name. Maybe call it the Copperhead or something. Keep the theme, but not the actual name.

The guys at Ford got away with making the new GT a V6 Turbo instead of a Supercharged V8.
I wouldn't mind a V8 Turbo on my new Viper.

OMG a V8 that is plain blasphemy. Rather have a Vega with a V8 then a Cadillac with a 4 cyl..Oh and they tried that too lol lol if failed as well...

Read a story the other day where the head of FCA, Sergio Marchionne, killed this rumor by saying there was no Viper in the plan and further doused the flames by saying the car was unprofitable.

yeah so much for the rumor, but at least Marchionne said a redesigned Viper “wouldn’t work with a ‘cute’ Euro-style engine.” I agree it needs to stay a V10.

if they do bring the viper back the car will be designed for the mass market and become more main stream like the vette. this probably mean the focus is more about being cost effective and economical. i wont be surprised if it has a less powerful engine, automatic/pattle option, softer ride, smaller tires, more modern/ tech options. the car will likely have a large options list to appease a larger group of buyers to be a profitable higher production vehicle. just call it something else if they are going to change the viper dna this much

these days a stick shift is an anti theft device, they just need an auto and more power to be appealing again.

Agree to a point. However, the replacement has been around for a few years. Anything with the 707 V8. Mass produced, cheaper because it shares parts with lessor models across several platforms and even blue collar people love it. The Viper at this point makes no sense as those that buy them are so picky it’s not worth the head ache even if the problem is product based and not consumer based.

I think it’s extremely unlikely the current 707 engine will make it into the Viper for several reasons.

1. The weight, The Viper is designed to be a lightweight sports car. The hellcat engine is a boat anchor and probably weights 100-150lbs more than the current V10 due to the iron block and the supercharger/intercooler.

2. The size, The 707 barely fits under the hood of the challenger/charger and the viper has much less engine bay height which is why it’s a wider V.

3. Heat saturation, The viper has been set up for more endurance racing versus drag racing. in endurance racing heat saturation is a much more challenging feet to overcome with forced induction. This is why the Porsche GT3 is naturally aspirated.

I’m not saying a 707 in a Viper, I’m saying no Viper at all, the cheaper version of go fast is here, just on a different platform

I think that’s a possibility and probably a better one, if they’re going to completely change the car call it something else. If they don’t do a viper or something similar they really won’t have a sports car in their lineup just muscle cars.

With all the great things that came with the Gen V and all the really happy buyers, the news and talk was saturated with the failures. Thinking about it from a business point of view, 13-17 was pretty ugly. I’m pretty sure people have considered the future and I pretty sure what they heard, all the crap from 13-17 gets relived over and over at nausium.

Just a reminder to you all.....the first John Buttera built 7/8 scale Viper (the one Castaing was seen in around Phoenix) was a V8. It was too small to hold the V10. An interesting point was that we developed an all aluminum 5.9L with dual intake plenums that put out 325HP as the base engine. It was going to be priced about $8,000 to $10,000 less than the V10.

Going back to a V8 is actually in the Viper's DNA.

You have to consider what the Corvette will be in a couple more years. It’s a moving target.

I was an Alfa guy before coming back to Mopars (Viper and muscle). I don't know, but I would think that Marchionne, and mob, would rather see an Alfa Spider, or more exotic Alfa, on the US market as opposed to getting back into making Vipers. They can make an Alfa true sports coupe and convertible be able to produce it around the world. I think you have seen the last of the Snakes, except in it's museum, and will have the return of an Alfa Spider to compete with the vete.
