Nearly a 10 In My Mildy Modified 06 Viper - 11.19 @123.80 - A Heartbreaker Read On

Hi Guys, been a while but finally back at the track. Should have had that 10 tonight. It was all there with perfect weather and great track prep, but the car would not make the power and I couldn't make another pass after I think I figured out the problem - fuel starvation. Very happy with the number but with the weather I had the car should have trapped 127 plus and with that a 10 we would have for sure.

Ran a record 1.71 short time and I think I could have tweaked that a little more with that one more run I didn't get. I was in the zone and went 1.76, 1.73 and then 1.71. A car pissed oil all over the track 35 minutes before closing when I was 3 cars back from running after adding some gas to the tank. Man am I pissed. Really wanted to deliver it for you guys and don't know if I will get the weather I need again this winter. Had negative DA of about -800 feet. Car should have shown a power gain of 6% from my old 11.36 run which was run with DA of 1500 feet. But I actually ran a slower trap speed than that run by nearly .5 mph (123.9 to 124.3) DESPITE running 1.5 mph faster in the 1/8th mile. All evidence points to fuel starvation on the top end. I only had about a quarter tank of gas and based on my analysis of the speeds and times from the previous slips I am almost sure she was running out of gas on the big end of the track. Oh well, live and learn.

Nonetheless, I will hope for another good weather night and hopefully get it done next time out. It can definitely be done, that I am sure of now but unlike the gen IVs that will trap high 120s in average weather to do it in a mildly modifed gen III the weather has to be there and we don't get many 45 to 50 degree nights that fall on a test and tune night. Also looking into a track rental.

Lol good DA but I don't see fuel starvation being the issue, not with a 1/4 of a tank. Something seems off have you pulled the plugs yet?

Go 60's and runs regardless.

It was actually a bit less than a quarter tank and I put a fresh set of plugs in for the event. If she ran 1.5 mph faster in the 1/8 and .5 slower at the 1/4 with 2300 feet LESS altitude something is happening to kill power.

Defiently somthing robbed you. 98-99 mph in the 1/8 is good for 125 easy and more likely 126-128 mph.


Nevertheless 11.19 is great driving.

Btw. Put her on the dyno and get your Air Fuel Ratio. Your quartermile time with outstanding power down low and so so power up top indicates tou may be running on the rich side.

Custom tune on the dyno or email sent sct tune?

Still running the nitto invos as before. Thanks for the recap of the battle to the 10s. Reads like a good novel. Lol. It could be something other than fuel but car felt strong and ran like a swiss watch. I did make one other change in hopes of picking up maximum power and that was to go to a thinner synthetic oil. But it makes no sense to pick up 1.5 mph in the 1/8th, which is alot, and then dump in the quarter. A dyno visit is definitely in order to see what is up with the fuel curve. Car should have picked up 35HP to the wheels with this weather and been 126 to 128 trap. Very disappointing. Never got to find out if it was fuel as the track got shut down so I really don't know. Will get to the bottom of it though.

Speedfreak, we have a "similar" setup. I have ARH and A&C tune, stock everything else; cat back, pulley, intake, etc. I agree that you may be losing a bit on the top end when compared to my runs. While our racing conditions were different (mine was 95ºF, Houston humid, 2500DA), our 1/8 traps are almost identical, yet I managed to pull an extra 1.55 mph by the 1/4. Your gain between 1/8 - 1/4 was 24.9mph while mine was 26.51mph.

Just curious as I plan on running some track days this summer. For all you guys running faster than 11.49, where are you getting your cages from?? I don't think I've ever even seen a street Viper with a cage?? But yet it seems like a lot of guys are breaking that 11.49 barrier where a cage becomes required.

Most test and tune events at most tracks won't require it on street cars. Had guys running in the 10's with no cage at my track. If you are running street tire and a late model car they pretty much give you a pass.

There is definitely something killing power. I was running those traps in much warmer weather with less mods. Do these things have a fuel filter. Never have changed it. Could be a weak fuel pump too. Car does have 68k on it and I am hoping it isn't just getting tired. Been well taken care of but you never know. Have never dynoed the car with the high end SCT tune I have in the computer. I think that is next to see what is going on.

I've added my times to the far right, compared to my Gen IV street tire pass.

I hope this isn't the case, but a friend of mine went out and made several passes, and on his last pass, he also ran a faster trap in the 1/8 than all of his previous passes, and was down 2 mph in the 1/4. Ended up with metal in his oil filter, and the motor was toast, as he probably wasn't getting enough oil on the bearings.

I agree with Andy, fuel starvation shouldn't be an issue with a 1/4 tank. I would show up with the fuel light on, and be WAY past E when I left the track, with no issues running down the track.

I'd find a reputable tuner and get a custom SCT tune on the dyno. I picked up substantial power after the first few flashes. Good luck!

Nice Work.....

I wouldn't rule out the low gas level in the tank...

Most TT guys will agree, you never go into an extended boosted run with less than 1/2 tank.
The shape of the Viper gas tanks can cause the car to "run out of fuel", even though you have 1/4 tank of gas. This is due to the gravitational pull on the gas to the back of the tank.
I have experienced this myself....

With 60' times like yours, that could be the problem.

Yes there is a large metal fuel filter under the car, back by the tank. I was staring at it while changing the rear end and thinking, "What a stupid place to put the filter for ease of maintenance". It's also $112.00 MSRP! I guess the old five dollar fuel filter is dead and gone...

Man, you launch and drive well.

You're thinking sounds correct.

1 - Low fuel will screw up a good time.

2 - Old, poorly flowing fuel filters can impact top end on a 1/4 mile and longer runs. If your fuel filter is OK, you may need a new fuel pump.

3 - Your tune might be off a bit but most Vipers run a bit rich up top and the power doesn't drop off much.

4 - If all of the above it OK, have your fuel injectors serviced by RC Engineering or someone in your area that can flow check them and clean them, then check them again for balance. With weak fuel pressure, you may have a couple of dirty injectors that are dripping. I change mine every year on my track car and there's always a couple of them below spec and usually a "dripper" or two.

Since the car felt like it was running great, could a slipping clutch on the big end be the culprit?

These vipers are weird... Mine actually loses power on the dyno if it kools down to long. My corvette on the other hand would gain more and more power the longer I let it kool.

Most of the guys in modded gen3s that did amazeing mph...

Eagle 124 mph in a stocker in 70 somthin degrees
345sbspinning 125 mph in what 80 degrees..

And whats his face got 126 mph with intake and exhaust in subpar weather.... Dag gone it.. He sold his and got a gen4... Whats his name????


Its always hard to guage anything when the cars so rare... But great weather never seems to do too much..

Hey, you talking 'bout me?? lol

My '03 went 11.73 @126mph all day in MD humidity. Worst results I had were at a viper track rental once, horrible track conditions & she still ran 125.X's, although I was spinning thru the lights at 12.1X's. The Gen3's can have some strong ass motors, I was so impressed with mine. Sold it & got the Gen4, not saying I regret it, but I can honestly say after a yr now I've still not bonded as strongly with this Gen4 as I did with my Gen3 ... just sayin.

Thanks, guys for the driving kudos. I am happy to say the problem has been identified and I am all the more pissed now. I had the car scanned today for error codes - ONLY ONE CODE - fuel system lean!!!!!!!!!! I suspect my tune is off from roe but one way or another the next good weather day the 10 is HAD. Taking it to Performance power here on Monday to get it sorted out. It could be a fuel system problem also as Dan mentioned - filter, weak pump, injector, etc. but there is no doubt she was going lean on the big end for some reason. Glad I didn't keep driving it or I might have done some damage. But that 4 mph I should have had would have got it done and I smelled a 1.6x 60 foot coming out of the next pass. I will keep everyone posted on the outcome.

Ironically my car leaked koolant all over the road today while doing timed 60-130 mph runs against a lambo lp570.

Car overheated the the underdrive crank pulley came off?

First time having a problem with it and had it two years

Cars revs a lil quicker with it
