Sounds like the PCM will not allow the engine to start. 97's have the vtss disarm switch? If so, I would start there. Also, the rear hatch glass ajar switch may need adjusting. Something is causing the alarm to stay armed. Hope you find the problem.

When I bought mine back in December in Phoenix, I drove it back to Denver w/ average speed of 80-85 mph. I was getting 21-22 mpg. Keep the rpm's down and you will be fine.
