1992 rt10 question and comment

Hi, Just bought a 1992 rt10 have always owner porsche turbos in the past butman this viper is like riding a roller coster ride just leaves you with a smile on your face. May be too late for me now but are there any negatives to owning the first year car, problems more common? I seems from the info. on superchargers they had a little beefer motor but I had heard in the past about head gasket problems. Also can the exhaust system roe sells be installed with the hanger upgrade on the 92 models. It's says it's for 94 thru 6 I believe. Any drawbacks besides the noise to going without cats completly? My idea is to go roller rockers, exhaust from header back, k&ns with smooth tubes, supercharger. Anything else bolt on that would add hp. It's hard to believe that with around 8500 in bolt ons the car can produce that much hp. It would take much more bucks and motor tear down to do a porsche 150 hp under that. Thanks Gene

Watch your oil consumption. Early cars and engines had chrome molley rigs, built for racing. If the rings were not worn in early on, then the cars burn oil. My car was using a quart every 250 miles. It will show up as soot on the back of your car after a long ride.
My head gaskets were not leaking when I had the engine rebuilt, upgraded to newer style gaskets anyway. You can upgrade the exhaust hangers and go with any exhaust system you want.
Drawbacks with no cats... smell.

If you have a nice stock 92, you might think twice before you tear into it with mods.
If it is bone stock and not a rebuild,
It's going to be a collectors car some day and I don't mean 20 years from now.

I ditched my cats and only smell it when I'm in an enclosed space (garage). It's not like any of the smells make it into the interior while driving.
I'd recommend it to everybody.

Just mod it and have fun with it !
Keep your original parts.

I agree get rid of the cats, definitely pick up some power there. Not sure about the Row exhaust on the 92.

Redenuff93 93 RT-10 dynoed 410 Rwhp with about just what you mentioned, but he did add the Gen II shorty headers.

Gene, Congrats and Welcome!

Joe is right, if your 92 is a clean and stock, you may not want to do mods. DC only made 200 or so of the 92's! Big $$. The 92 motors were burning oil. If your exhaust is still stock with the spring hangers, I have the DC upgrade hanger kit in stock. What number do you have? If you would like to call me, I can tell you more about the 92's, I have re-built many of them.

Yup, my opinion is the same as Joe117-- keep it stock. If you do change anything--keep all the old parts including the fasteners. John

Congrats on the 1992!

First words of advice: Make sure the wheels are POINTING STRAIGHT when you get on the GO pedel - you don't want to get bit by the torque of the snake!

I have a "Carry-Over" 93 Viper that is identical to the 92 in every way. I'm in the process of changing out the head gaskets right now and doing an exhaust system. I'm building my own exhaust as the standard Gen 1 bolt on systems don't attach very easily. You can get the hanger adaptor from TATOR - but it sounds like that project is more than bolt on and I'm not sure if the ROE system will bolt right on anyway. I'm saving the complete old exhaust and building from the stock header back. I'll post pics and details once it's complete - so let me know if you're interested.

HI, Thanks for the info. My car is no. 193. It is stock except for the polished factory wheel correct for that year. Yes if I do any mods I will be keeping the orig. parts including fasteners. My father used to restore mustangs so I'm in tune with keeping the parts. That's kind of why I bought the 92. I like the 96 gts also. I have a 69 shelby drag pack car with the 3.91 rear. I may sell it when I get the rest of the smog on and get a 96. I probably won't even folow thru with the mods but it would make a nice ride. Remember the movie vanishing point those 2 cops ( maybe he supercharged that big dude )Gene

1 thing tho I would change (and did on my 99) is the sound system they ****.
