I'm concerned that I'm asking a really dumb question...

My boyfriend and I stopped at a Dodge dealership today in VA. The dealer said that he had a stock 2005 Viper Mamba that had 600 HP. We popped the hood and nothing looked different than my 2004 Viper. ...any truth to the dealer's claim?

And that is ALL stock SRT-10's from 2003 to current - all 510 HP and 535 TQ...

There are no dumb questions - just dumb salespeople! :2tu:

I too am going to sound very stupid here, but why have i seen 03-05 vipers in magazines say the viper has 500HP and 525lbs of TQ. Why is it that for 2006 they now say 510HP and 535TQ? Your saying since 2003 they all have 510 and 535?

They haven't changed the horsepower since 2003, just the way they rate it....no change in the 03 - 06.

How exactly did they change the way the rate HP? anything to do with SAE?

Exactly right, it changed in 2005, and what they found was that Japanese makers were overselling their horsepower rating, the domestic cars were now under-rated. See quote below....

SAE-certified horsepower
In 2005, the Society of Automotive Engineers introduced a new test procedure (J2723) for engine horsepower and torque. The procedure eliminates some of the areas of flexibility in power measurement, and requires an independent observer present when engines are measured. The test is voluntary, but engines completing it can be advertised as "SAE-certified".

Many manufacturers began switching to the new rating immediately, often with surprising results. The rated output of Cadillac's supercharger Northstar V8 jumped from 440 hp (328 kW) to 469 hp (350 kW) under the new tests, while the rating for Toyota's Camry 3.0 L 1MZ-FE V6 fell from 210 hp (157 kW) to 190 hp (142 kW). The first engine certified under the new program was the 7.0 L LS7 used in the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Certified power rose slightly from 500 hp (373 kW) to 505 hp (377 kW).
