I thought I read somewhere that SRT has the 08 stock intake optimized where intake modifications would not be as beneficial as it was in previous years. Am I wrong? If that is true, a 15-20HP increase sounds very optimistic.

Says "potential" gain. Even super-marketer Henn****ey says theres no benefit from an intake, and he'll charge a lot for anything that MIGHTH work.

$200 for a K&N and some 4" smoothies? I'll pass and make my own.

And no, the 08 does not have smooth tubes.

I know after talking with Steve Sharples in Detroit, he said to be careful playing with the intake. He joked and said there's more technology there than in the engine. He did say the typical smooth tubes and filters can cause an adverse issue. He also mentioned something about the way the air flows, he said the slightest change can throw things off. I've also been waiting to see people's experiences.

I have also heard from some reputable tuners that just removing the air filter from the 2008 has activated the check engine light and that the air intake end of the equation is quite tricky on these cars. That's why I was wondering if anyone has actually installed one of the Snake Oyl kits to see if (a) any problem with check engine lights and (2) if there was any actual gain from the install. I would be thrilled if it gave 20 hp but would also be happy if it even gave in the 7-10 hp range.

Even if you bypass the smooth tubes, I can't see how a K&N filter can cause any problems. It has to at least out-flow a factory installed filter. Does the new engine have a MAF unit. If not then oil on the sensor wire is not an issue.

I don't care for the look of the 'wrapped' & cut tubes anyway ... not nice enough for a $90K+ car ... IMO ... I'd just go with a green filter and that's it.

They apparently do from the pic on the Snake Oyl website. Also, regarding the K&N the last information I had was that there was not a purpose built K&N for the 2008 but it just so happened that the K&N for a Mazda vehicle (the RX-8 I believe?) actually fits the 2008s.
