Re: 3.55\'s or not !!
The 3.55s would feel great on the street, no doubt(I had 3.73s before/GenI), but on most lightly modded cars the recommended shift point used to be about 5500-5600rpm at the strip which is where most the power drops sharply. So the question is, ..is it better to have the engine straining for a higher rpm than that with the power curve dropping like a rock, or be in the fatter part of the torque range with more muscle to urge you onward. You're fighting alot of wind at 120mph and beyond. I come up with about 119MPH @ 5600rpm, using 3.55s. Most near stock GenIIs are doing that already, so... I think it really boils down to this..if you only go to the strip once a year, but get more enjoyment from romping through 3 or 4 gears occasionally on the street, than the 3.55s would lift your excitment level alot. If, on the other hand, you're serious about drag strip performance, and you're worrying down your ET bit by bit at the strip often, AND if you're going to add more mods , the 3.55s could be a detriment; probably sooner rather than later. As I recall, the consensus posted here by those racing often is 3.33s are a good set for the strip allowing some torque multiplcation without chopping MPH capability drastically.
