I know we're all familiar with the laughable heater/AC control, that has no use whatsoever as far as temperature control. While not a huge deal, it is a PIA to constantly be switching between AC, vent, off, etc to maintain a constant temp.

My question is whether or not there is a fix for this? Plug and play chip/software, replacement, send the box in to whoever, I am ready to do this.

If no one is doing it, one of the aftermarket vendors should get on the ball! While it may be a small item in a performance car, a lot of people ultimately will swap their units out (like we all did smooth tubes and K&N's), so I'm sure there is business to be had.

Now you're talking! The HVAC on a gen2 is laughable at best. It was +80F out a couple days ago, and my AC was blowing warm air! I know it's not my compressor or that I need a charge... It blows VERY cold air when it's 60F out! Anyone with ideas on this? I'd hate to face summer with no AC. I'm a pansy that way.

I'd also like heat to come out of the vents. Would that really have slowed down the Viper any had they done that?

I'd pay good money to fix this major design flaw.

It sounds like your AC coolant level is low. AC coolant leaks in Gen II cars are common. Have your AC system checked. Dye is used for this. If there is a leak, the dye will show where it is located.

I checked and can see the green indicating a full charge... or is it misleading?

You are looking at your coolant system coolant. You cannot see your AC coolant aka freon or R 122, etc. You need to have someone do a pressure check on the ac system to see if you are low.

I think the temp knob is not a true "mixer"?

Its just all-or-nothing. Hasty design, but what are you gonna do on a shoestring budget? :)

Maybe we could find out what function we are missing, and canibalize it from another design. Oops, I mean, "adapt it". We don't cannibalize parts, we engineer things, right?

I'll check later, but I thought that the defrost mode mixed hot and cold air. True, A/C only comes out the dash and heat only comes out the floor, but defrost comes out on floor and glass and can be controlled.

While we're talking about it, why not upgrade the blower assembly? This way, the AC will not feel like it is trickling out of the vents. Since there are only 3 vents (and 2 crotch coolers), the added pressure would seem to be smart.

I always wondered something. My sons Honda Accord will freeze you out of the car.
It has a smaller compressor yet it cools much better???

After all these years I'm shocked that there is no definitive answer to all these questions, and that nobody has figured out a fix/upgrade.

The amount of heat a Viper generates is considerable and well beyond a Honda Accord. No side sill cats on an Accord.

At least in 1996 GTS's, there is a sight glass for AC charge checking. Always showed bubbles when my charge was low (often until the condensor was replaced) and always looked solid when it wasn't.

Agree however that the HVAC system in the Viper is low budget. I'll still keep the car though.

I've had my Viper over a year and have messed with the HVAC controls less than 5 times I'm sure. They are such a joke, I forget they are there most of the time. Another enduring quality of Viper ownership :)

Exactly! After installing things like a Roe fan controller, I can't help but wonder why no one has come up with a fix for this. I'm sure there is a similarly easy solution. Can't be that hard, but I'm no engineer. Thought I'd throw the idea out and see if anyone was up to the challenge.

There is a solution but it is a bit costly. Its called buy an SRT-10. The AC on my new coupe is powerful, the ac temperature control works, and all oulets have adjustable vents. In many parts of the country the foregoing may not be that important but here in South Florida it is crucial.

After much tinkering, cutting, and welding, I've come up with the best aftermarket AC system for the Viper... I'll only charge you guys $10k for the kit.
