anyone change a fuel pump in GTS

My 2000 GTS hickup and died twice on the way home Friday night. It's done it a few times before, the last time at Willow coming off of turn 8. It feels like it runs out of gas and dies. After a few minutes it starts up. It does not throw a code.

The car had nitrous on it before and I've never liked the splice job on the TPS. It gave me some problems in the past. I removed the connector and soldered the wires this weekend and it seemed ok on the short drive but it still has me somewhat concerned and thinking I should change out the FP module.

Anyone else had to change a FP?

It's not too hard.

1. remove rear hatch panels
2. remove rear cargo carpet
3. remove the rear panel (round) to gas tank. Drill out rivets
4. Unscrew the retaining ring of the Fuel Pump Module.
5. Pull Module out after disconnecting fuel lines and harness.

You are going to want to relieve the fuel pressure before you do the above....otherwise you will have a mess.

I'm not sure that's a FP issue. Why don't you give your wiring repair some time before you start spending money. You could also put a temp fuel pressure gauge on it then you would know for sure.

Not saying that it is not your fuel pump, but I had a similar problem with my GTS. The battery was the culprit on mine.

At it would crank fine when it died? Mine cranks like there is no tomorrow, just wont' fire.

Tony's suggestion of a checking fuel pressure will eliminate the pump. If you have to change the pump make sure the tank is near empty. I believe it is only available as a complete assembly (bottle assembly and pump). Be careful with the fuel line, it is fragile and easy to damage.

Is it possible you have an aftermarket pump. It might not have the second outlet that fills the bottle, therefore, when the tank is low, the bottle may not fill fast enough in a hard turn.

Mine cranked fine and wouldn't have even thought that it was the battery. After stalling and not being able to start, I let the car sit for a while and then it started right up. I replaced the fuel pump and still had the problem. I then changed the battery and never had that problem since.

I'm going to check the battery connections before I proceed any further. I've got a FP gauge I can put on the Schroeder(sp?) valve and I might be able to watch it through he windshield while I drive. The other choice is to buy a cheap one from Summit and just install for awhile.

AFAIK...it still has the original pump/filter assy, no aftermarket stuff. The nitrous system used propane for fuel enrichment.

I drove it today and it didn't miss a beat. The drive home will be hotter...who knows.
