Anyone ever get caught in the snow?

This past Friday, November 18 I actually believed the weatherman and got caught in the snow. There was indication of flurries but nothing about accumulation. I've only had the car for three weeks or so and I was trying to extend my summer driving with the Viper and I got caught. It was not a fun ride (it was rather nerve racking).

I now hold the title for "bonehead of the month" award. To add insult to injury, a Mustang pulls along side me and the passenger started taking pictures of my car covered in snow while I'm doing maybe 5 miles an hour. I'm sure that picture will show up somewhere. It was a full digital camera, not even a camera phone.

I used to get caught in my old Stealth occasionally but with all-wheel drive, I was okay. I can guarantee that will never happen again in the Viper. Luckily the salt trucks weren't out yet.

Looks like it happens all the time. Luckily Partsrack sells a plow kit for cheap. Bolts on just like a front plate.

Viper in snow == Motorcycling on snow
It can be done, all depends on the driver.

The only problem is the salt. The Viper has zero protection against rusting.
You will have to wash the underbody in the smallest detail.

I did once, got caught on a weekend away in the mountains of VT (Columbus day weekend). Woke up to an inch of crusted snow on the ground. Negotiating the parking lot was the worst part of it...

The snow didn't actually have a chance to accumulate when I got caught (I went home early even though where I worked, it didn't look too bad). I took the most heavily populated roads on my way home in hopes that the snow didn't have a chance to settle. In two spots I was fish-tailing for a good length of time. I would release the clutch... start fish-tailing... depress the clutch within about 5 seconds. This lasted for at least 10 minutes at a time.

The frist snowfall in Toronto is always chaos. For those in the area, I took Hwy 404 and Hwy 407 and both were stop and go. Thankfully, I didn't have any hills to worry about. Of course, the side streets where I live were the worst part but I was lucky that there was nobody on the street. A typical 20-30 minute drive took me 1.75 hours. It was not good.

I got caught in the snow on my Supra Turbo 350 miles from home on I-91 in Vermont. And I don't mean flurries either. I didn't check the weather. The 2 lane highway was reduced to 1 lane. Traffic speed dropped from 70mph to 45mph. At 30mph, my rear end was fishtailing like crazy. At 45mph, it felt like I had a death wish. I pitied the cars behind me that kept a safe distance but could not pass because the passing lane was too icy. This was on 255 wide Michelins. The same ones that are 335 on the Viper. I'm guessing it's worse in the Viper. Talk about snowboarding.

And yes, I'm good at steering with the rear.

P.S. I ride my motorcycle in the snow too when I feel a little nutty.

I drove home from a Thunderhill ViperDays event over the Mt Shasta pass in snow storm. It was 30 degrees and smowing, and the roads were snow covered.

The Police were making trucks put on chains and when I spoke to the officer he said that he thought I'd be OK, and he was right. I didn't have any problems.

I forgot to mention I lightly hit the guardrail with the front bumper...I just wanted to get home after over a full day of driving, but it didn't happen that way.
