back thing with the fins

Curious as to why the bottom (facia?) on 08 coupes are either painted to match the car or a flat black? Don't know what it's actually called but the thing with the fins.
Was there an option or was it a production change?

Cars with stripes are black, non striped cars get body color.

And it's called the rear diffuser. (Diffuses air into a straight line at high speeds to **** the rear down) Too difficult to transition stripes into it being the reason for blackout.
