Battery Service Question?

Checking the battery this morning, tray and one of the mounts are a little fuzzy. Is there any problem with connecting a battery tender or charger up front to maintain voltage in the system? I hear about computer and alarm problems when the battery is disconnected, or, am I overthinking this?

Huh? Hooking up the tender while the battery is installed in not a problem.

Are you asking about hooking up the tender without the battery?

No big issues if battery is disconnected. It is not different than any other car.

Many people hook up a tender under the hood. The whole issue is odd, and varies from car to car. For example...I ALWAYS thought mine NEEDED it, based on what I hear, read, and experienced first-hand. As my car sat for a little over a week at the paint shop....I thought we would have problems. Not a one....started right up. Having said that, my tender has been hardwired sine 99....so, I'll leave things be (if it ain't broke....don't fix it). Lots of threads about tenders and storage.....I'll try to find some links.

My mistake, I want to remove the battery and clean the tray and mount. Just didn't want any computer or alarm trouble. Sounds like it will be ok. It still has a Mopar battery, maybe original.

just replace the battery while ya got it out. its worth the few bucks not to worry about it for a few more years.

Plum is dead right. If you are going to all the trouble to access the battery, and it is more than a couple years old, then replace it. Just did mine with a low cost Wal-Mart battery.

The better tenders will not work when there is no battery present. They have a safety that prevents them from working if they don't "see" a few volts in the system. It is to prevent hooking it up backwards or arcing.

Best bet is to get one of the 9 volt battery backup things that plugs into the cigarette lighter. You can get them at Napa, Parts America etc. Works like a champ.

Many of us install the battery tender hookup such that the receptacle (that the tender hooks up to) is just inside the driver side gill. This way you can connect and disconnect the battery tender without opening the hood. I have a battery tender as I read it prolongs the life of the battery. A must have for any garage queen that is not driven frequently.
