I have a blue/white 96 GTS that needs new paint. I like how the blue/black makes it look more aggressive and it'll allow me to powder coat the wheels gloss black since the wheels look so rough right now. but the blue/white is the classic color scheme. the car has been repainted before so i'll be fixing some of those flaws. i'm prediciting to get chastized pretty good on here but just thinking about it right now and looking for others opinions.

It will be awesome. But, I'd hate to lose the B/W. I would paint as factory and then go vinyl for stripes, at least you will have the option to easily change back if you wish. I have a 96 GTS too and am planning to put vinyl stripes on mine for a change.

Whats wrong with the paint? Looks fine in that picture. Do you have any detailed shots of the problem areas? Is it just typical bubbling & hairline cracks that are normal for a 15yr old fiberglass car that has been driven?

Leave the stripes be. If your stuck on the black kick then vinyl over the white so when you change your mind in a few years you can peal em off and have the timeless B/W classic scheme.
On the wheels, set aside the dated 17" stockers and replace them with some updated looking 18 or 19's

lots of stuff wrong with the paint. it's to the point where it NEEDS to be repainted becuase the guy i bought it from neglected it so much. I have wet sanded and polished as much as a i can and i'm still not happy with it. a car of this caliber should look like a million bucks from 12" away and right now it doesn't. the engine bay looks good finally but that is it. even the red powdercoat was flaking so i had it redone in metallic blue to match the paint

What are you budgeting for a good respray with stripes ? How much disassembly do you plan to have done ?

Why not paint it back to factory colors, but add an overlay (wrap of black stripes) over the white ones and the rest of the wrap remain clear (sorta like the 3M clear bra). If you ever have the wrap discolor or change your mind about the look, you peel the wrap off and voila, you have perfect paint.

One thing though, you may want to wait until all the solvents evapourate before putting a wrap on the car.

I'm sure you wouldn't like the look of vinyl black strips over the white ones because there'd be a ridge...correct?

Aaron

i'd rather do paint instead of vinyl due to the gloss of paint with clear as opposed to a flat black stripe. it wouldn't be too hard to go back later and just rough up the clear and black to spray white and reclear it if i don't like the black or want to see it with factory colors

i think it would look great. gonna hurt resale but i never worry about that personally.

me either, i plan on keeping it for a while and driving the hell out of it. it's damn sure not a garage/trailer queen. I have a friend that is a general manager at a road course track here so i plan on going there to play quite a bit as well

Blue/Vipers are a real special breed. Maybe sell yours and pick up a less desirable color to repaint. The price difference would go a long way to paying for a quality repaint.

There are actually more B/W GTSs than any other GTS combo. I love the way the B/Ws look just like most folks. It's really the base blue color that sets the car off not so much the white stripes. The black stripes look amazing in the photoshop. If you want black then just paint them black. The GTS is a rounded car and it would be very tricky to do a vinyl overlay...You would have to go slightly smaller with the paint stripes and then you'll have a vinyl stripe with both an outer and inner ridge, The guy in the other active post said it took 20 hours to get his vinyl stripes correct on a solid car...

I love my vinyl stripes but the paint is clearly better. If you want the black just go with it... If it's a top notch respray and appears even deeper than factory paint it could add to the value.

I like the black stripe look as well, but I don't think I could do the vinyl, because the kit I saw is an 8" stripe, just like my white ones. I'm sure some white would show through the edges.

Also, how the heck would you vinyl the NACA opening, looks like a nightmare ..

Anyone done it?

I personally hate black wheels and don't care for the Blue and Black look as much as the Blue and White look. I don't know about you, but I can't tell you how many times I get complimented on the color of my car. Almost everyone that talks to me about my car and asks questions about it compliments on the color blue the car is, but also how the white stripes compliment the GTS blue as well. It's all a matter of personal preference and It is your car. So whatever you think looks good, then do it. Resale value doesn't really mean much to me either, since I will never sell this car. Also, if I cared about resale value I wouldn't have modded it and plan to continue to mod it.

However, if you do put black stripes and paint the wheels black, make sure to change those ViperGTS emblems on the sides and on the rear with the Dodge emblem to black as well.

By the way, how much would a full out paint job cost with and without the stripes? Someone told me it could be upwards to $20,000. Is that true or was someone completely off? My car is in pretty good condition, but like most of you who drive their car and not garage it, the occasional scratches and dings tend to happen. I'm planning on just repainting the whole front bumper and both side sills and one panel on the rear drivers side when I get the chance.

$20k for a full repaint is a little high, especially for a Viper. Most of the panels can be pulled with relative ease, so disassembly/reassembly labor isn't as bad as some vehicles. Stripping vinyl stripes off and getting stripes painted on my car along with some chip repairs and a full fascia repaint would have run about $4500 (but I know a guy...). :D They disassembled most of the car to do the stripes and ran them through the entirity of the front fascia, the NACA duct, the licesne plate area, and the rear fascia.

I would expect a full repaint to run in the $8k-$10k range.

Funny... Your photoshop is exactly how the white would look like under the black. It would just be easier to repaint and re-clear white over the black when and if you decide you want to go back to original... About $1,500 to do that is a fair price... I paid $350 for vinyl including the premium blue metallic roll...

I had gotten an estimate from Saleen (when they were still painting the Viper panels) to repaint my silver 03. I was going to get it painted Viper Bright Blue. They would have disassembled the entire car and run all the panels through the factory paint process. Cost was $20,000 which, given the deal I could get on a new 08 in Viper Bright Blue, I passed on.

The paint job would have been totally factory. From what I understand from a body shop friend unless the car is completely disassembled you can't bake the panels at a high enough temperature to approach the quality of a factory paint job.
