Brake Caliber pin fell out. It was one of the worst noises I have ever heard (the pin coming out and hitting the wheel). Bent the Sh#t out of the pin. Tried to bend it back and put it back in (to use temporarily) but it popped right out in a matter of miles. I think I need the pin and the metal piece that goes on top of the pin.

Questions

1. When I changed brake pads should I have put new hardware in?

2. Does Dodge still sell replacement Brake Caliber pins?

3. I need to have this fixed by Wednesday (going to the track) if I can’t find it at Dodge what are my alternatives.

Thanks,
Dan

1. I've put brake pads in probably 20 times (swap them for track pads for track events, etc), and always use the same hardware. I'm pretty sure you always use the same, but you do have to make VERY sure the pin is ALL the way back in - it should almost be flush with the side you can see.
2. No idea
3. No idea (sorry)

4720 986 Front pad, pin, and clip package
4720 987 Rear pad, pin, and clip package

Might be able to pick up a pin from some nice Club member with spares.

I personally have NOT BEEN ABLE to order pins separately from Dodge for Gen I or Gen II,...they are sold as a package for a given caliper (front or rear) that includes pads, pins, clips as mentioned above. At one point (3 yrs. ago), I got some pins from Brembo N.A., which is an option that has been "closed".

I am sure you could order the right diameter steel pins from stock metal round and cut it to length from Mcmasters.

I still have the pin (just a little banged up) I am thinking about getting a small clamp or something to put in thru the opening on the side of the Caliber to hold the pin in. At least in till I find a replacement. Has anyone tried this?

ab, the pin has changes in diameter to locate the anti-rattle spring, and the far end is also smaller where it sits in the caliper body. Sounds like a possible GoR new product idea...

Dan, a small hose clamp through the opening that allows you to see the top of the pads and the edge of the rotor might work. You would clamp the old pin just inside the caliper body so it couldn't move out of the hole. If you have number drills, you could drill a small hole through the brake pin just inside the caliper body. Then use a small cotter pin or hitch pin to keep it in place.

The hole in the caliper body where the springy-ball thing would sit might now be enlarged. Try a good pin and see if it will stay - it might not.

Another emergency idea would be a stiff wire. Cut it just longer and bend at each end to keep it from coming out. You could get fancy and add bends where the brake pad anti-rattle spring sits to help keep it centered, like the original pin does with the different diameters.

What would be the interest in replacement brake pins? (Quick market survey.)
