Hi, I have a stupid question. I recently bought a '95 RT/10 and want to be able to do donuts and change direction by spinning the car around 180 degrees rather than doing a 3-point turn. But I don't know how to do this. Can anyone teach me the proper "technique"?

That is not a stupid question. This subject has been talked about on a few occasions. It's not that difficult. Someone will be along shortly with the answer.

Too much on or off the go pedal while in a turn can result in at least a 180. I assume you are speaking from a standstill. Revving just a little and dropping the clutch should do that.

To do a 180 while moving forward is most easily done with the emergency brake and a small amount of steering input. Very good chance of flat spotting tires though.

A basic question though is why?

How old are you? Please God, tell me this isn't your first car, or your dad's pride and joy!

I'm a very "mature" 26 -- the RT/10 is my 4th car. I want to know how to do this because I was racing up at Willow Springs this weekend and a guy in a Cobra pulled into the pits and executed a very well controlled donut. It just looked cool and I don't know how to do that in a safe, controlled fashion.

Find a LARGE empty parking lot. Come to a complete stop. Turn the wheel to the left, almost completely. Push clutch in and rev to 3,000 - 4,000 RPM's. Let the clutch out quickly (AKA - dumping the clutch). Tire will immediately spin like mad. Modulate the gas pedal to control the speed of the spin. Don't floor the gas pedal for more than a second - you will slam the rev limiter really quick in first gear when the wheels are spinning. Turn the wheel more to the left will also shorten the diameter of the circle, increasing the speed of the spin. Turning the wheel to the right will make the circle wider, until the Viper is eventually straight. This is how you can do a few donuts, and then take off in a straight line with the tires smoking/spinning the whole way. Turn it even further to the right and spin in the opposite direction. Once you get good, you can induce a spin at 20 MPH, but will need a lot of room, since while you are spinning your still moving forward. You will also need to rev the motor higher 5000 RPM's to get the tires spinning from a 20 MPH roll in first gear. I would not try this until you master the spin from a standstill. I would not recommend the parking brake manuver, unless you want to flat spot (ruin) your rear tires. When you slam on the parking brake from a roll you lock the rear tires/brakes. I recommend this on rental cars, not Vipers. If you get really good and daring, quick shift into seconds gear during a spin. That's when the smoke will really start to pour off the rears. Just realize the wheels will be turning 60-80 MPH in second gear, so if they decide to hook you better have a lot of room. Do not try this until you become a donut master.

You can also wag the tail of your Viper left to right. Point forward - wheel straight. Rev Viper to 3000-4000 RPM. Dump the clutch. You viper will begin go straight, but pull slightly to the left or right, depending on road - if your wheel is 1% towards left of right. Let of the gas slightly, but keep the wheel spinning. It will begin to straighten out. As soon as it hit the center point, punch the gas again. It will now move in the opposite direction. Once it feel like it is going to spin, let off the gas again, but keep the wheels spinning. It will begin to straighten out. Repeat process. Of course, practice in large, empty parking lots. VERY LARGE. Many people have wrecked there cars by trying these things, losing control, and jumping a curb, etc...

BTW - You will go through rear tires REAL quick if you do these things often.

Follow onerareviper's instructions. Pay attention to his point about not mashing the gas, you'll definitely hit the rev limiter and then your face will hit the windshield! Hitting the rev limiter is not only ******* the car but when the massive torque turns into massive braking it isn't fun!

You can watch our regions latest event video here ... http://24.70.202.82/pat/vipers/media.htm (right click and 'Save As' on Autocross - Car Wars) and you should see me playing around a little going in different directions while burning out (which was on a safe track setting for all you people that want to jump on this thread and start preaching about unsafe driving). You'll have to put up with watching the sappy parts of our video though!

Doing donuts _in the pits_ of a racetrack is not "safe." It's stupid and the guy probably should have been booted.
