Try your wife's foam finger nail sander.It's a little fine sandpaper covered foam block maybe 1" by 3". Worked great. You did not hear this from me.

This is something I need to do and wondered what would be just the right grit to do it.

I use wadding polish -- you can get it at any hardware store.

Here's a before and after picture -- the Sneaky Pete on the left is before and the rest are after:

And how often do you guys do this? I was under the impression the surface will quickly turn color unless you coat it with something.

I'm not married, so I just used a standard green Scotch brite pad, and accomplished the same thing. :2tu:
