Custom exhaust

I have a friend who runs a muffler shop in Denver, he says that the gen 1 Viper with side pipes has very restrictive flow. He thinks with a custom cat-back exhaust that I could get about 40hp. I never really considered exhaust for this car because of the side pipes. This horsepower estimate seems really high- is it possible?

This is my first post, I just joined yesterday, so I apologize if I am doing anything incorrectly.

I have a gen II, but it is doubtful you will see quite 40hp on the exhuast. I would certainly swap out the stock exhuast and call Jon B at PartsRack to get Random Tech hi-flow cats at the same time. Cats and exhuast will improve sound, flow, and get you close to that hp in my opinion. Besides smooth tubes, exhuast was one of my first mods!
