Diff. drain plug update

How many have actually done the "how-to" diff. drain plug upgrade?

I've done it on a couple diffs. When you start to cut the threads it don't go too far with the tap. Better to cut a little then fit the plug, then cut some more and fit the plug until you get the plug flush.

I've done it. I did made a smaller hole so I could could go bigger later if needed.

Test fit the plug for sure so as not to go too deep.

Very easy job.

I also made a custom pipe to refill the diff out of soft copper tubing. It bends easy to fit and I could ty-wrap it into place. I stuck a funnel in it to fill.

Although I probably will only change the fluid every 3-4 years (at 2,000 miles/yr it doesn't need it more often) I did the drain plug mod when I first bought my car.

The hardest part I recall was keeping the drill perfectly straight while laying on my back on the garage floor. I used strings with heavy washers on the ends to keep things lined up as I drilled.

Then there were one or two part numbers that were wrong in the guide. The tap was for one size and the drain plug was for another. Several of us posted the errors in a thread but I don't know if anyone ever corrected the how-to.

Just drilled the hole partially through tonight. It's draining now. The oil was very clean so I guess the guy I bought it from told me the truth. At least I know.

Thanks Jeff, I noticed the mix up so I just went to Acklands, said "I want to do this" with the how-to in hand and the guy gave me a plug, then matched a tap and 7/16 drill bit and said go for it.

Thanks for the link, the comment on the shaving was so true, they are every way and I was covered with them.

Now to find pipe-cleaners this morning.......

PS. Holy Crap is Mopar diff fluid pricy!!!!

I drilled mine out thru the back of the bottom cover bolt. It's a smaller hole, but works well. I just use copper ATV to seal everything up including putting a gob of it on the bottom bolt.
