Gen 2 cam in a Gen 1 Viper ......

More specific - not all Gen II cams are the same. The 708 cam gives the most power. I believe that is the 99 cam.

HAHHA,.. you guys are killing me, your ALL right..

96-99 is the same CAM, 708 !!

its 2000+ that gets the less duration cam (not as powerfull).

Actually the duration (and lift) stayed pretty much the same on all Gen II's, it was the valve overlap that was changed from 66 degrees to 60 degrees which is the difference.

KenH is correct, I typed faster then I thought, its the overlap that they changed.

3 excuses people have given for the reason:

1.Supposedly owners complained about the rough idle in previous years
2.Dodge did it to reduce Neutral Gear Rattle
3.Emissions, keep getting tighter every year.

If you are going to go to the trouble of replacing the cam, wouldn't it be best to buy a new cam with the specs that you desire. It would be a lot of trouble and possible expense, if you pay to have it installed, to replace the cam, so I say "go big or don't go at all." New cams are pretty reasonably priced and you could get more HP out of an aftermarket, more aggresive cam. I don't consider the stock cam very aggresive.

The 708 cam can make great power if intake centerlined properly, its easy to tune and will fit a Gen 1.

There are many things to consider when running a bigger cam.

1. Will the engine make useable hp?
2. Will I be able to tune it (remap the air fuel and timing)
and will I need a injector or fuel system upgrade?
3. Do I have the right cylinder head combination?
4. Is the valve spring pressure correct for the profile?
5. Can the lifters used live with the spring pressure nec. to run
the profile?
6. Do I need to run a billet cam with the spring pressure used.
7. Is a rocker ratio change a benefit or hinderance with the profile used?

I have used many a "hot cam" only to find that it was hard to tune, made only peak power or wore out the valvetrain. Be Carefull !!!, Out of the many cams we have tried over the years we have found about 5 that work really well. There are some cams that are advertised which simply do not work.
