I just ordered a chrome Gen II GTS gas cap. I am trying to remove my current gas cap. The service manual simply says to remove the 4 bolts and then remove the gas cap. But after i got the bolts removed, I noticed the gas cap is attached to the drain that connects to the gas tank. On the backside of the gas cap there is what looks like tape wrapped around some kind of thick sticky black substance. Do I need to remove the tape and black substance to seperate the two? Otherise it appears i need to remove the rubber ring on the outside of the gas cap where you stick the fuel pump when filling up with gas.

Sorry for the noob question, but I really don't want to dissasemble this incorrectly and cause myself more trouble in the future.

There is a post on this....I tried to find it for you but for some reason the search engine is not my friend this afternoon.

From memory, you do need to separate the filler tube and the cap from the gasket ring.

The thing that's IMPOSSIBLE unless you know the trick is getting it back together.

The easy part is using a little dishwashing soap to lube the gasket material...not too much but ebnough to make it slippery.

The IMPOSSIBLE part is knowing that there is a hole in the filler tube which you can feel for with your fingers. Get a barbecue skewer and bend a 1/2 to 3/4 inch hook in it to "hook" and hold the filler tube as you're sliding the gas cap stuff over it.

Once you've done it the operation takes 25 seconds. With this data it'll probably take 20 minutes. Without knowing that that hole is there, it'd take 30-40 days!

Just pull real hard. The rubber grommet will slide off the metal filler neck. Not sure why there would be goop on it unless it was some sort of leak repair. Hard part is renstalling the new unit. Hints: 1) intall the rubber grommit on the gas cap first. It goes onto the filler neck a LOT easier than onto the cap; 2) I have very small hands and forearms so what I did was stick my whole hand into the hole next to the filler neck and grab the neck with my hand so I could pull on that while pushing on the cap with lubed rubber grommit. It went on a lot easier than anticipated but I am not sure how to do it without grabbing the filler. If your arm does not fit, perhaps it is time to get the little misses involved in working on the car!; and 3) put some tape and padding on the body around the gas cap area as it would be really easy to damage the paint in the heat of battle - especially where the hinge is.

put some tire dressing, on your finger and rub some of it on the rubber grommet, leting it sit in the sun for a few helps a bit as well. The tire dressing will soften up the grommet and it will pull off easy.

if you ordered the MGW gas cap, it will come with a tool to stick in the filler neck, to get the new gas cap on.

I recently installed a chrome gas cap as well. After asking a few questions, this is how I did it. When taking the cap off the hard part is getting the filler neck to slide off of the gasket ring. I didn't use any lubricant, but once you have the bolts off you will notice that the cap will move away from the car body. If you can slide one hand behind the cap assembly at 3 o'clock and pull out while pushing down on the filler neck on the same side, that side will "pop" out first and the rest is easy.

I used engine gasket material to cut out a gasket to fit in between the back of the chrome cap assembly and the car body. I used a small amount of lithium grease to lubricate the inside of the rubber filler neck gasket. The new chrome cap just bolts right in.

Getting the filler neck seated through the rubber gasket is the final problem. I didn't have the MGW tool for this, so I figured that if I used my lockable gas cap and screwed it on tightly enough, it might "pull" the filler neck through. As you know, the cap will only go on so tightly before it "clicks." I than tried pulling on the cap. The cap came apart. This was fortunate because it only has three pieces plus a rubber gasket. The inner most piece is shaped like a top hat and is what screws into the filler neck. It also has 4 holes through the "lip." I used some heavy gauge wire through each hole, screwed the piece into the filler neck and pulled back on the wires and viola', the filler neck popped through the gasket. The locking gas cap reassembled easily with no damage, although now I realize how easily it can be pryed off.

As the guys have said, getting the new one back on is not easy, until you have done it once. Do you have MGW tool and instructions?

I just wanted to post an update and thank everyone for thier help. I finally got the new gas cap on, and it was alot easier than I initially thought it would be. Thanks for the tips on using the tire dressing, after I put that on the rubber grommet it just slipped right back onto the gas cap with ease. The whole thing only took me ~10 minutes to put back together. The hardest part was trying to find gasket material to make a new gasket for the backside of the gas cap. Fortunatley, the local HomeDept had these 4"x4" 1/16 inch rubber sheets in the plumbing isle, so I bought one and cut out a new gasket from it.

Once again, thanks for all the help.
