Grinding 6th to 5th gear change

Morning Gents.

I just got back home from putting another 1500 miles on the FE. FSJ to Kelowna and back, great trip, great roads...driving in BC is more entertaining than anywhere else I've had the pleasure of driving...the curves just never stop coming

But anyways, the reason for my thread is that when i downshift from 6th to 5th i get grinding. If i'm traveling 75mph (about 1600rpm in 6th) and downshift to 5th its rough. i've tried feeling my way around to see if theres a better angle to make the change and cant find one. i've tried double clutching to smooth the change and that hasn't worked. The only thing that results in a totally smooth change is if i do it VERY slowly & VERY gently, as in take 5+ seconds to complete the shift. which is ok, but it really takes the rhythm out of driving in those higher gears.
Does anybody else have this issue? every other gear change is perfect, 1st through 6th moving up and 5th through 1st going down. I can even change from 6th to 4th very quickly and then quickly shift up to 5th with no problems. Just any move from 6th to 5th results in grinding and i'm not particularly comfortable with it.

any insight would be appreciated or links to threads of those with a similar problem (my search key words didnt result in anything specific to my dilemma).

How many miles on the car, what kind of tranny fluid is in it, and when was the last time it was changed?

Have you tried blipping the throttle to match rpms on downshift? If that works it would sound like a bad 5th synchro.

18000 miles on the car...although two months ago when i bought it there were only 12200 I have no idea what kind of tranny fluid is in it or when it was last changed...that is probably a good place to start.

I have tried rev matching but so far still grinding.

If 5th's synchro is bad whats involved in repairing it?

It'll be rebuild time For me, I came out cheaper buying a brand new (0 mile) Gen 3 tranny from Jon B. at PartsRack.com and having it installed.

Here you go Chad, one T56 with a reverse problem and another with 5-6 problem will make one good one and a few extra parts.

Tom. Unlike you and me who could take a cup of milk and a box of screws - stir them - and make a chainsaw motor that way... Chad is still trying to figure out how he's going to rotate the air in his tires next service.

Considering I was told by 2 or 3 local tranny places that they wouldn't "touch" a manual transmission when I was still contemplating having mine rebuilt, I don't feel quite so insecure about my non-transmission building skills I am pretty good at selling though. I had my old T-56 sold 45 mins after we had the new one installed, so it'll be someone else's problem to gut and rebuild

Excellent. Dave will be interested in how many ******* girls you can afford to entertain with the proceeds. Maybe you can also make a commission from the pointing the buyer to the 5/6 T56.

PS: Chad, the air in tires is automatically rotated while you drive. Don't let Dave fool you into buying some expensive tool you'll only use once.

I sold my core to another GA-VCA guy, and he's gonna go pick it up from the shop of the GA-VCA member who replaced it, so I don't even have to worry about shipping it.

I wish you guys would be serious some of the time. Any dummy with a driver's license knows you don't rotate the air, you rotate the tires. The 335's up front rub a little, but with the 275's on back, burnouts are so much easier
