Help with shift knobs

For my own warped reasons, I'm trying to change out the oe shifter for a new one that will also sit anywhere from 1/2" to 1" lower than the oe knob. Since the gen 3 oe knobs come with an attached shaft, I will need some shaft that fits over the 1/2-20 threaded isolator and attach's into the 1/2-20 threaded new shift knob. No one seems to make this and to have a one off shaft manufactured is quite costly.

I believe I can order an isolator replacement in a shorter length, but then I loose the isolator.

I can certainly order an MGW (great guys) knob which is perfect....except it's not quirky (like I have seemingly become).

I can also have Dan (great guy) at Viper Specialty replace my oe knob with the same, except with a shortened shaft. But then I have the right height but not the knob that I want.

If it sounds like I'm whining....well that's because I AM! I want exactly what I want and I want it now!

But seriously, does anyone know a reasonable means of replacing the oe knob shaft with some shorter version that I can use with an aftermarket knob (without loosing the isolator)? Or should I just **** it up and get on with my life?

Yep. Spoke with George who's very happy to help and inform. They've got their shifter set that will work perfectly. They'd even make me a one off extension shaft, but it would be ridiculously expensive. If I can't find a means to get my aftermarket shift knob installed properly, for me, their shift knobs are the TOTL and I'll buy one of theirs.

Which reminds me...I've got to sell my Gen 2 Gripper shift knob now that I can't use it. It's a sneaky Pete in pearl.

Scott: We went with the MGW knob, as it IS lower and not as 'clunky' as the stock shifter. We also had that in the '05...it's PERFECT for shifting. That was the FIRST thing we swapped out in the '08.
We got it in BLUE FANGS...gave away the one with RED FANGS in the '05. Quirky enough for us! ~juli
(Shifting THIS car is a breeze....much better/smoother shifts...and the '05 was GREAT as well!~)

That's a good idea Dave. I know the thread size is 1/2-20. I'll have to measure the length of the oe shaft.

I now have over 100 different parts for Vipers Built by Viper a owner for Vipers.

My new 5 point crotch brackets for 92-08 Vipers will be here hopefully by Friday

Well, Dave's special, but most shops don't need to manufacture stock of a new item like this and to produce just one is a PIA. It's twice the price of the aftermarket knob I was considering.

Scott, there are some knobs that slide completely over the threads (that is, they ae not secured by the threads), allowing the knob to sit lower on the shaft (don't you love it when I talk dirty?) by another 1-2".

Most Momo knobs will work and are secured by an adapter and 3 hidden allen head screws. I use one on my RT/10 in conjunction with my B&M, but they'll work with any shifter handle. I've actually installed the same style shift knob on my last three cars since I like it so much.

Will work on one like I use for 92-06, but have a grove for the shifter boot to ride in, allowing for a 1" or 2" drop like 92-06, and be able to use MGW short knobs or your OEM knob.

I need to check to see if the black isolator is the same for all year Vipers

Thanks Chimazo! But you still have the problem with height. The stock SRT (unlike the gen 1 and 2) shaft is too low to mount (I'm getting ***** like you now) nearly all of those aftermarket knobs. You need an extension like the one that Dave's managed to make. Otherwise, I would have reinstalled my MGW gripper that was perfect on my '01.

Anyway, it looks like I may be able to use my 8 ball shift knob after all!

Hey Dave,

Here's what I have available now, this 5/8"s/s rod replaces the black isolator and will give you a choice of a 1" drop or a 2" drop when using your OEM Shifter handle.
I'm working a prettier version right now, but that will be a while. Both versions will do the same job and aren't seen anyway.
Adding anything to the black isolator will increase the handle height. MGW's short shifter handles attach to the isolator, making the shifter handle lower. It's the OEM's 5.5" that create the lowering problem.

Here's a really good comparsion of the lowered shifter rods to the black isolator.
As you can see in the pictures the different lenghts of the s/s rod to the oem black isolator.
