I think maybe they did not represent it that way, Motor Trend picked up on it and did some bad reporting without checking facts. Standard stuff for them. Road and Track and Corvette magazine got it right.

If it was the blue devil, then it should lap the ring about as fast as a Carrera GT. For a 500hp production car to do the same sounds silly. The standard C6 Z06 should turn about the same lap times as a Gallardo, F430, Ford GT or other 6.0-7.0 lbs per hp car. My guess would be 8 minutes flat. Ok maybe 7.59.99

Re: Hey DC, the GTS just got its butt kicked at the

There is a video on www.spdklz.com of a Z06 revving the engine and it almost sounds like it has a SC on it, maybe it is just the sound of the new LS7. It would be nice if a Blue Devil did exist or was going to be made but I kinda doubt it. You can't always go by what the magazines are saying, they want to sell magazines, viper guys of all people should know that since alot of the mags seem to be biased in their reporting on Vipers.

A video about sparkling jewlery? That link asked me if I wanted to reset it as my homepage. And I thought it stood for speed kills....

You would think they would have some inside info but unfortunately they DON'T.

Agent must have the inside story, he knows more than the car mags, including CORVETTE MAGAZINE, So his theory must be Agent is right, Road and Track and CORVETTE MAGAZINE are wrong. I don't think in all the time I've been on this board that I've ever seen a greater case of denial or as I call it....Bow Tie Myopia. For Gawds sake Agent I'm actually a bigger Corvette nut than YOU are, I've owned 30 of them and I'm a current owner. It would be nice if a 500HP car could lap the Ring faster than all those other supercars. I'm sure it lapped faster than a GTS driven by an auto journalist. But it defies the law of physics for it to go as fast as you want to believe if stock. It simply makes sense that it was the lightened and higher powered blue devil. WHICH DOES EXIST by the way. The only question is will it reach production. And the fact that it WAS the Blue Devil at the Ring has been confirmed by the two magazines mentioned. And puleeeze gimme a break with the stock car sounds supercharged, we're talking trained automotive engineers who happen to be journalists reporting this. Having said all that, it's still an incredibly fast time even for a 2900-3000lb car with 600HP. So fluff up that pillow with the checkered flags on it and lay your head down in peace tonight, your marque still done good, they just did not do it with a production unit.

C5 Z06 ran a 7:56, I think the C6 Z06 just might be a little faster.

According to the Aug 8 Autoweek it was not a Zo6, but the factory built "Blue Devil". They complained that lots of Auto manufacturers are using the Ring for cheap publicity, as it is easy to notify the paparazzi where they should be to get some "spy shots".

I believe Chevy did a cheap shot by attempting to use the Nurburing as a marketing strategy.

The original poster of this thread got reeled in...hook, line and sinker.

In my opinion, when the facts come out...the Viper will still rule the American highway. The Corvette will blow itself up trying to match its performance.

"Article translated:

Thought this would be interesting to you all.
Scanned from a recent issue of "Bilmagasinet" - danish car mag.
Interview with Jan Magnussen about (among other things) his record lap at NBR.
Here´s a translation:

[Top pic, Magnussen and Vette:]
Thursday morning, Southern Germany. General Motors have discreetly rented the legendary german Nürburgring track for an hour between 7 and 8 in the morning.
The temperature is more comfortable than at Le Mans, and the track is empty apart from a couple of early rising spy photographers.
It takes more than a blue Vette to exite them - they recognize it, it´s the Z06 version, the brutal Vette with 500 BHP. What they do not know, is that it´s Jan Magnussen behind the wheel.
The objective is to beat Walther Rörhl´s laptime in a Porsce GT3 RS - it´s 7:43,0 min for the 20,8 km heavily varied track with 73 corners.
The record was set in 2004 in a standard version of the Porsche.

[Splash in middle]
Jan made 7:42,9 thereby beating the Porsche GT3 RS by 0,1 sec.

[Two lower photos]
"The photo is taken at Flugplatz. I´m going 240-250 km/h at full throttle in 4th gear and the car is actually jumping twice: After the first jump it lands so hard that it takes off again, as you can see in the second picture. As it lands the second time I have to take a sharp right immediately after.
The car is a standard car with street setup - had it been my racer it would hardly have left the tarmac. At NBR the street car reaches 295 km/h on the long straight in 5th gear (6th gear is an overgear for saving gasoline). At NBR there are no run-off areas like other tracks,. You simply have to stay on the track. When you are halfway around the 20 km, you think it´s a good thing there are only half as many places left you risk running off the track" Jan says.

[About the track and the car]
"The stree Corbette has virtually no grip compared to my race car which has a large rear spoiler. But it does have almost as many BHPs as my Le Mans racer and is almost as fast. The rev limiter sets in at 7000 rpms, and it does have more than 500 BHPs.
It´s fast.At the record attempt I drove 2 x 2 laps with a cooldown lap inbetween for both mine and the car´s sake.
I couldn´t have driven one single lap more. I wouldn´t have liked to drive a single meter (3 feet) more with myself at the wheel at that speed", Jan finishes.

Again all credit to the original poster and scanner."

Re: Hey DC, the GTS just got its butt kicked at the

That's pretty pathetic if they have to run a mule around the Ring balls out driving and then try to misrepresent it as a stock Z06. Can that possibly be true?

OMG are you kidding? We're talking about GM here - the masters of hype. They prop some prototype for their blind faithful to brag about then let 'em down with second rate production.

That being said, the past few years Vettes have been fine cars. But for me, there just isn't anything striking about them. Every year a "new and improved" 350. Yawn. Styling has gotten a bit better (only a bit), "sleeper" interior as in - sitting behind the wheel you'd never know you were in a sports car.

Just thinking about Vettes makes me sleepy. Time to go to bed.
