how much Refrigerant???

Funny you should ask! I just did this today. 1 big can and one little can. The "big" is suppose to be twice the size of the little. So 3. Might have could have added another can, but 3 did just fine.
How many OZ is that? I'll check when it stops raining... I already put the trash out.
It took less than 10 minutes to do this. It was even easier than changing brakes out.

The "big" can I used had leak sealer, compressor oil, and refridgerant. The "little" can was just refridgerant. I'll know in a day or two if I had any leaks that didn't seal...
But the A/C was blowing cold when the stuff went in!

This is probably the EASIEST thing to do on a Viper, or any car for that matter! Go to Wal-mart, and buy the kit that comes with three cans of refrigerant w/oil, quick disconnects, and pressure gauge.
Turn on car, with a/c fan on full blast. Remove blue cap under hood, passenger side, near A/C compressor. Cap should have the letter "L" on it. Attach quick disconnect, and read your pressure. It'll probably be zero. Depending on outside ambient temperature, you should have around 45 psi (the instruction book should list what pressure at which temperature). Attach can, hold upside down, repeat when can is empty, and stop when pressure is 45 psi. Don't worry, the pressure will spike to 100 psi when you first start emptying the can. Once it is empty, the pressure will go back down.
The whole kit with 3 small cans is about $35-40. The big can is about $11 separately. Small cans are about $5 separately.

So, it's possible to have a large 14 oz can with only 10 oz of refrigerant. Some of the smaller cans actually hold more refrigerant... so, it's important to buy the pressure gauge. I'd recommend not getting the cans with built in pressure gauge. For one, they are expensive. Second, you can't reuse the gauge.
Oh, and read the cans! They ALL look the same. Some of them say R134, but is actually just a can of oil with zero refrigerant in it. Don't ask me how I know

I'm not sure what you mean... heat what to 125 degrees?

Stugots, that's weird... whenever the AC guy adds refrigerant here at the house, it's always running.

I think we are comparing two different charging systems here...
Dodge probably has a fancy machine to do it, thereby justifying the $200 they charge for filling up the A/C.
I was describing the Wal-Mart universal A/C charging system, which requires that the car is on and the A/C is running full blast. Otherwise, the refrigerant will not go into the compressor (because with the car off, the pressure is too high).

No, using the Wal-Mart kit, you DEFINITELY don't want to heat it up. It would probably blow the can up. After you screw the can into the gauge and quick disconnect assembly, you'll want to screw the plunger into the can all the way. This will puncture the can's seal. Then, unscrew the plunger and the refrigerant will flow from the can into the car (hold the can upside down, and continously shake it).

"The book" says the system takes 30 oz. of R134, more than that raises the head pressure significantly.

30 oz. sounds about right. The big can (with additives) only has about 10 oz. of refrigerant. So do the smaller cans. So, 3 cans is about right (man, that is some killer math I just went through ).
As for JD's car, I'm pretty sure A/C is the least of his worries in terms of raising the head pressures
