Since my car will need to be repainted eventually I've been hitting the local spray shops up for estimates on getting a standard, same-colour, full repaint. I figure this would be a good gauge on what it'll actually cost me when the time comes.

Just to be clear I'm talking quality - sound work, not something from Bob's Haircare, Bait, and Primer. I flatly cannot believe the numbers I'm seeing. I've heard of ViperTax, but I think this qualifies as ViperGouging. For a full disassembly, strip, paint, wet sand, and gentleman's guarantee on work the CHEAPEST bid (from over 15 places) I have so far is a little over $8,000!!!!

Am I over reacting? Does this seem fair for quality work on a single colour?

While I'm on the subject has there be any confirmation on what causes blistering on the hood? A couple of guys told me they won't touch the car until they know why it's happening.

holy hell you're a *****, prepping RTM is a hell of a lot different than prepping steel for paint. Just take it back to lowes and see what they recommend. I think they have a seminar on this..

Between $7,000 and $10,000 which includes complete body disassembly of the car.

When I was having some paint work done earlier this year I asked about a total repaint and I was quoted $7,000 which entailed taking the car apart and painting each part seperately.

My R/T cost about 6K. That included disassembly of the car. Removal of the hood, doors, trunk, hinge panels, front and rear fascia, side sills and most of my interior. The interior was removed in order to paint under the sport bar. It also included "smoothing" of the hood (getting rid of the cross pattern) to make it look like glass. This was done at McHugh's in Hollywood FL. I have had allot of cars painted in my life and have found that quality work costs money.

I find that maybe a little less than I would charge. One thing you have to take into consideration is that people with speacialty cars are anal about how it turns out. (Wife does custom paint work.) To get smooth as glass is VERY time consuming. Buffing in cracks and crevases ***** bigtime!!!
I would say 10K and you should have a show car!!!! :D
btw, the materials are getting way spendy, bought a pint of viper red a while back and it was like 70 bucks  THAT WAS OUR COST ON IT  not including all the primers, activators, clears, tape, sand paper(which isn't cheap either)
there is prolly a couple K in supplies before yer done,,,***????

people wonder why it costs so much to paint a car

or ya could just go to MAACO

Bonk, I would not do it that way. I see no reason to disasemble when you are shooting the same color. You should be able to simply sand and spray, Just treat the paint job as as a last color coat and then clear. That presumes that all surfaces need no repair.

I just had my navigator repainted...fully stripped down..wet sanded, etc. quality work (and the navigator has a tri-coat paint where the base coat is a different color then you spay the metallic red and then a clear!) Cost me $4500 canadian which is about 3300 U.S. or so.

same color I would only take off the sidesills and only strip the panels that were burnt. Red paint is expensive, you are looking at about $1000 for paint materials. They you need to wet sand and buff for a mirror finish. I rencently did an overall Corvette (C4) for $4000. That about what I would charge based on what I remember you car looked like.

Paint jobs are expensive. You need to consider the cost of supplies and labor rates. But, some shops will give high estimates because they don't really want to be bothered with a complete repaint. My father collects old cars and we've had many paint jobs done. For instance, he is currently building a 1931 Chrysler street rod. He paid around $8,000 to have the chassis and body painted that Plymouth Prowler burnt orange color. We stripped all the old paint, the car was already in pieces, and it didn't really need any body work. He paid somewhere between $8,000-$9,000 and that was reasonable compared to other estimates. One well known (over priced painter)in our area wanted $15,000-$20,000 to do the car, so this gives you an idea that a paint jobs are not cheap and estimates will vary. Get some estimates and if one shop interests you ask to see a car they painted. Then, talk to the owner to find out how long they had the car for because some shops take forever. I'm just giving advice from past experiences.

I must have, Mr. I bought Elites [******] rip-off fascia to go with my custom hack job TT setup...

Fact is 8K is in no way out of line for a repaint.

If you want a real show quality paint job, you can take the car to a shop like Fat Alberts, Phoenix, AZ. They sand blasted the entire car with baking soda to remove all the factory paint. Painted my stripes on (with nothing else). Then painted the (Ferrari) red over the stripes. Color sanded through the red to reveal the stripes and leave them at the same height as the red. Spray on 4 coats of clear. Color sand the clear then buff to a mirror finish. Those who have seen my car will tell you the paint is awesome. But get ready to write a big check. The paint job took 3 months and cost... are you ready... $26,000!

I'm really shocked. I know that show paint can run
big $$$ but, since I drive in rain, snow, and AutoX,
I wasn't planning on anything flawless - just shiny.
I was sure it wouldn't run more than $4-5k so now
I'm back to step one with my design plans.

Nothing quite like a swift kick to the gut to help
you start off your day.

Most paint and body shops will have different levels of finish. Where I have mine done they offer a "driver" and a "show" the only real difference is the total hours. How much time is spent taking the waves out of the panels and how much time is spent sanding and buffing. I have my cars done in the "driver" finish. That way when I get a rock chip I'm not suicidal. You don't want to drive a show finish on the streets of South Florida.

I think his point was that $8k was the lowest quote he received out of 15 different shops. One would expect at least a few of those shops to be in the $5k-$7k range, and some to be much more than $8k. But for every shop to be over $8k seems odd.

An idea, call some of those same shops back and get a quote on a color change on a C5 vette...just to see the price difference....
I know that it would be a challenge to correctly paint a viper fully assembled.(side covers especially), as I am repainting my car and have also removed the front and rear bumpers to make life easier. I also think that the 4K-6K is fair if it is just a respray. At least $1k in materials and ??? hours @$50,$60,$70 per hour to prep and spray. If it is $8K around you, it may be cheaper to find someone further away and ship to them...GET REFERENCES FIRST!!

$26,000 for a paint job?? Lots of money burning a hole in that mans pocket. Just take it to Maaco they will have the whole thing painted for ya in a day. They wont even wash it before they start to paint. Total price..........around $350.00 :D
I would guess $10,000 would get you a really great paint job.

Bonk,
Someone who knew the previous owner of my car mentioned its paint job cost about $7k, and that was a few years ago.

Listen Beavus, quit embarassing yourself. stick to painting models. I have had my car at a reputable tuners shop and he even said it looked good. $8000 is out of line to paint a salvage car. He is not looking for a show car paint job. (which I have done by the way)
