After getting some advice at the GA-VCA party on Saturday (thanks Tom!), I had my brakes and clutch bled today, and replaced the battery with a Optima red top. While the wheel was off to replace the battery, I noticed it was also new tire time. I have tread on the inner and outer part of the tire, but the center is Nascar smooth. I know most guys seem to be going with the Kumho V700 tires, but after talking to Tire Rack, they say the tire is made out of a race compound and will only last about 5,000 miles. They said the Michelin Pilot Sports would prob last around 10,000 miles. I drive my car atleast 1-2 times a week and it does go on some trips, and I dont track it, so I'm looking more for longevity than track performance. Anyone have any other suggestions for tires that they have tried or have any new Pilot Sport tires lying around taking up space :D ?

Chad,

I went with the V700s in the rear and noticed a major traction improvement over the Michelins. The V700s cost much fewer$$ but if you calculate miles per $ they are not that far apart. The Kuhmos grab like hell! I won't ever go back to Michelins!

Sorry I missed you guys at the GA VCA Christmas Party! Wayne and I planned it together but I was out of town!!!

Rich

Thanks Rich. You missed a really fun party. The gocart racing was an all-out war :headbang: . I totally missed the point where I can buy the Kumhos for $200 each and get 5000 miles out of them, which is the same as $400 for the Michelin's and 10k miles, without the benefit of the grip the Kumho's have. Ok, looks like I'll go with the Kumho's...but 1st, I wanna go do a lot of donuts and burnouts to be sure my tires now are really shot :2tu:

Part 2: Where's a good place to buy the Kumho's? I'd like to to buy from a VCA supporter if possible (Jon B?).

I spent $250 each for my Kumho V700 rears and love them. Really solved my traction problem. Tire Rack was the place I got them a month ago. Going where you want to go under acceleration without spinning out is far more important than tread life IMO.

Try the Toyo RA1's. They are the best "cheater" dot-legal tires I've tried (run them all). They are the spec tire for the world challenge series. They have decent tread depth, are sticky as heck, have decent wear, can handle rain, etc.

Great tire for street use, especially for high power cars. You won't ever go back.

do th Kumho's eat up the side of the car by picking up more stones?

If the tires are spinning, how far are they throwing stones? While sticky tires may pick up stones, the stones you throw from spinning may be worse.

I ran a set of Kuhmo's on my C-5 vette and when they got warm, like at the track, they really picked up and tossed the stones, I would put some clear-bra like plastic on my wheel wells and lower panels.

V700s are awesome. I didn't have a problem with stones at all. Although I did use the clear bra on the rear paint to protect it anyways.

They stick like GLUE and go well with the Pilots up front too!
