Hi Guys, I've been driving Japanese imports all of my life. The Viper has always been a dream car for me, and now I am able to afford a used one :) . Looking at a 97-97 GTS right now. Just wondering how reliable these cars are. How about maintenance costs? Your input is greatly appreciated.

BTW-Can anyone also recommend a good shop in San Diego to get it serviced?

Is that a '97 or a '97? I have a '99 which I think is one of the best years for a GTS. Having said that I do believe the GTS's to be very reliable. Just make sure you have someone with Viper knowledge check out your car before hand. I do know they rent a lot of Vipers in Sand Diego so be careful. Can't help you with the tech. I've been to SD at least 5 times but never with my snake. That's a bit of a drive from VA.

P.S. Nice name. Where'd you get it?

Thanks. I believe it's a 97 maybe a 98. As far as screen name goes, I'm a school teacher down here in San Diego. A few years back when I joined the forums I couldn't figure out a screen name. Then one day one of my students said my car(2000 Toyota Celica) at the time looked like the batmobile, and since my car was blue, I called myself Blue Batmobile :) . The name has stuck since then.

Vipers are probably the most reliable exotic out there. Unlike Ferraris and Lambo's, they're not gonna cost you an average of $1 (or more) per mile driven. Parts usually arent cheap (Thanks to "Viper tax"), and labor at dealerships seems to run about $100/hour on Vipers. The good thing is, Vipers are actually pretty easy to work on and a lot of work that may be needed can be done by yourself if you have a basic knowledge of cars and a nice toolset. I wouldnt let potential maintenance costs stand in the way of buying one. Japanese imports can be so much harder to work on than Vipers and sometimes far less reliable.

I agree with V10speedluvr, this is a great car and highly reliable. I drive it long distances at least twice a month and have been doing so for the past 10k without a problem (knock on wood). Enjoy it and respect it like you would any other car and it will last.

Since you are in San Diego and we do have a VERY active group you should look into joining us on an upcoming event. For more information sign up at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SDVIPERS/ . We have some very knowledgeable folks and equally friendly. As for servicing, West Coast Viper is located in Temecula.

If you join, don't plan on getting your welcome pack anytime soon. It's been 6 months for me and i have yet to see anything, but they were quick to take that $100.

Thanks Mark ;) . I spoke to Bruce from San Diego today as well. You guys have been really helpful, thank you :) .

BTW, I would like someone with great knowledge for the Viper to check out the one I'm considering getting. I saw the car over the weekend and drove it. I loved it! It appears to be in pristine condition, but I'd like an expert to maybe take a look under the hood...and give me the ok to get it. The car is in Mision Viejo, I'm here in the Mira Mesa Scripps Ranch area. If anyone's willing to go up with me, I'd appreciate it. Oh, I'd ;like to pay you for your services as well ;) . Let me know...you can pm me here on the forum.
