Hello,

could someone of the technical guys tell me where to get the speedometer signal which is necessary for getting a navigation system fully work on a 1997 GTS?
I'd like to use a navigation system from VDO/DAYTON (in earlier times: PHILIPS), which needs power (no problem), a GPS antenna (no problem) and for full functionality the speedometer signal (often gripped from the gearbox).

Many thanks for your help!

Best regards
+ best wishes!

I worked for Etak, Inc. for the first 9 years of it's existence (we developed the worlds first automotive navigation system). Even then, we didn't need to use the speedometer for accurate navigation. We used the combination of a flux-gate compass, map database and wheel sensors.

Todays systems use GPS and can calculate very accurately your cars speed.

I question the need to tap into the speedometer when all systems (regardless of method) can calculate the speedometer within it's stand alone system.

Hope this helps you...

I thought navigation systems used GPS for speed data. But if you still need it, the factory alarm module has a speedometer input going into it so that it can lock the doors after 8 mph.

This wire is very simple to find. Take out your gage cluster and the speedometer has three wires going to it. If I remember correctly one is for the light, the second is ground, and the third is the speedo wire. The way I made sure I had the right wire was I put the back end of the car up on a jack and used a volt meter on each wire. If the voltage changes when you get the tires spinning a little you have found it.

These are some pics of me installing a rev speed meter that I use to control my second stage.
