Trannys toast. Its out, looking for another one. Took us two novices 3 hrs to get it out. Have noticed other cars like the vette, v8 camaros and such also use this transmission. Are they identical? Gotta be a ****load of them out there in comparison to the viper qty. Figures, prior to yanking this tranny out, I knew locations of three trannys.

Also I see LUK clutch components really cheap on e-bay. Seems too good to be true. Car is a stock daily driver, probably always will be. Is this stuff acceptable for a car driven spirited (no track time) up to 10,000 miles a year? If not, what do you reccomend besides oem or do you think its not a bad idea to run with what I got and just stuff a tranny in it. I know, hard to say. Just asking.

Car supposedly has recent clutch work. Can see maybe 3/16" of clutch lining on each side if that means anything. Slave cylinder or whatever the thing is hanging on the input shaft with two hydrolic fittings isnt leaking. I dont have an issue with buying this stuff new but seems like a waste if it isnt nessesary. Seems lots of you guys change out these parts @ low miles and maybe someone has this stuff laying on their bench they want to get rid of. Shoot me a pm if you do. Would really like to get this up and going next weekend.

Sure would be easy to put plug wires on it now. Any reccomendations for a particular brand? Anybody on the board sell them?

Obviously you're not on here much, but that's no crime. Ill just jump right into this one. Assuming that you have a GEN II, your tranny is a T56. granted there are a lot of them out there, I would no doubtably search for one that came from or is designed for a Viper. NO EXCEPTIONS. They can be difficult to come accross if you're looking for something specific ie. low miles. Bottom line look around call some of the site vendors (X-VIPERS, JonB PartsRack, Chuck Tator...). Those guys can do a lot to help you find your new trans.

Lets move on. The clutch can be found on ebay. LUK brand is the stock brand and ebay has it $185 to you door. I just put mine in several months back. The slave cyliner, which you described as the "thingy" hanging off the main shaft, you may want to change out. Sometimes they just don't jive right if you put it on a different transmission.

Flywheel next. Either get yours resurfaced, or get a new one. My suggestion is go for a new one. Chromoly or lightweight? Either way, better to go new with this since it transfers the power to the drive train.

I have a master cyliner should you feel so inclined to change that as well. It is unused and I can let it go cheap.

Do a search and you can find plenty of threads and posts that can assist you. This truly can be a DIY job.

Best of luck and if there's anything I can help you with shoot me a PM.

I can't tell you if the trannys are the same. I would guess the only possible difference would be gear ratios.
I know ebay has Viper trannys often, except right now
Then check the Viper recyclers (XVipers, X2builders, etc).
Also check with SVS. They are liquidating all their Viper parts.

From your plans the stock LUK clutch should be fine. I have been told they will handle 650+hp and are the smoothest of all the Viper clutches you'll find - on that note, I have a RPS 6-puck clutch and alum. flywheel forsale ;)
And yes, the ebay ones are OK to buy. Sometimes even Viper parts are reasonable :omg:

If you are replacing the clutch and installing a used tranny, put in a new slave cylinder. Chuck says they do go out and it is so much easier to change now than to wait and see it start leaking 200mi after you put it all back together.

Another upgrade to consider while you have it all apart is an aluminum flywheel. Do some research to see if it is something you would like to do. Some people like them, some don't.
I personally love it - and on that note again, I have a Fidanza alum flywheel forsale in the classifieds :headbang:

OK, I don't know who said a vette uses any Viper parts??? Joe/VWiper and I sneaked into the rear of the GM tent and got a couple pics of the ZR1. It's OK 'cause we weren't seen.

You must be registered for see images

Vette trannies don't bolt to the engine! They bolt to the rear axle!!! After looking at the exploded view of the ZR1 I'd say that they stole our Michelin tires and nothing else is even close to fitting a Viper. Imagine trying to shift your Viper from the trunk??? Vette shifter is 4' long?

GM takes short cuts and buys cheaper stuff than Dodge. They don't use the good stuff.

Lots of cars used the T-56 according to e-bay add for a manual. Didnt seem that unreasonable to think one would fit a viper.

This illustrated 47 page Service Manual PDF file is for the T-56 Borg Warner Tremec Transmission. This six-speed overdrive transmission is used on the Corvette Z06, Dodge Viper, Ford SVT Mustang Cobra, Aston Martin DB7 Vantage and V12 Vanquish, and Holden Commodore and Monaro.

As can be seen there's nothing close to fitting a Viper.

The engine at the front of the vette has an aluminium 'can' with what I presume is a clutch inside. An aluminium tube bolts to that and Iwould presume that there's a driveshaft inside. The ancient (Model T?) technology (called a Torque tube) bolts to the transmission which is bolted to the rear end housing.

I'm guessing all that ancient technology was used because GM had trouble getting the weight 50/50(?) and giving a few inches less tunnel width. That allows the car to be built a little bit skinnier?

As you can tell, I'm not a GM fan, I hate to lose.

The internals from what I have heard are different. The Viper trans is suposed to be stronger. I would only use a Viper trans and you can tell as it has the logo on the side.

I have

Stock and heaver clutch used
stock used and alum flywheel new

I know that car needs motor mounts to line everything up. Check that out.

Between 1992 and 2006 you can mount the transmissions between the Vipers.
The bolt pattern is 100% the same.

However there are a couple of light differences:

- From 2003 you will not have the speedometer connexion on the transmission. If you mount a 2003 transmission on an older Viper you will have difficulties to read the speed.
- From 2003 they improved the internals of the transmission. The shaft design has changed. It is much stronger.
- The week points are the 5th and 6th gear in the Gen2 and Gen3 trannies. They are too small to handle a lot of torque. In the 2008 transmissions they are using a better steel for these gears.
- It is very easy to find parts and rebuild a T56

Dave, I am with ya brother. The next six months are prime for us. My top will be off. The car top that is, hell I may take mine off to just for the hell of it.:dunno:

I think those who would take cheap shots at the tranny remark are too busy in the Politics 101 category :nono:.
