Detailed Vehicle History Definitions:
First Owner
When the first owner(s) obtains a title from a Department of Motor Vehicles as proof of ownership.
Lease
When someone leases a car from a dealer, the dealer actually sells the vehicle to a leasing company. The leasing company then collects payments for the vehicle from the new owner for 24, 36, 48 or more months. A leasing company can be an independent car dealer or a car manufacturer.
Manufacturer Buyback (LEMON)
A vehicle with major problems that has been repurchased by or had its price renegotiated with the manufacturer. The state marks its official records or issues a title brand for manufacturer buyback vehicles, also known as Lemon Law vehicles. Laws vary by state as to the specific requirements for a "lemon". Most manufacturers issue some buybacks that are not the result of Lemon Laws but rather a courtesy; these buybacks are not recorded on the title.
New Owner Reported
When a vehicle is sold to a new owner, the Title must be transferred to the new owner(s) at a Department of Motor Vehicles.
Personal Use
Vehicle was registered by the owner for private or personal use.

CarFax may not always have all the data about a car (unreported wrecks, states not sending information in, etc), but it sure can save someone a pretty penny when its major problems with a car
