New Viper owner who can\'t stop smiling

I am a newbie on the Viper forums, having just picked up my '98 GTS last week. I can't begin to say how thrilled I am with this car, it is such a rush to drive. Like so many of you, I am a former Vette owner, including a new 2004 Z06 that I traded in to get this Viper. I got tired of the vette for several reasons, but most of all the fact there are just too darn many here on Long Island and a vette is nothing particularly special to see or own, there are 100 in my town or more. I'm willing to bet there are not ten Vipers.

I was at a chevy dealer taking another look at the C6's when I spotted this just traded in '98 GTS. It is red and the body was flawless. The mileage was only 9500 on it. One look at it and the low mileage and obvious care the owner had taken sold me, I knew I had to have ths car. We are talking a real garage queen here, the owners manual which I finally found was never even opened it was still wrapped in celaphane. I have looked at a few others including a 2001 GTS in sapphire blue that had 13000 on it, but it was a little beat up on the paint, probably raced. Anyway, I bought the '98 and love it.

So...some questions for the group. I am coming over from a Z06 and the difference in handling and power is really apparent. The Z was so "refined" in it's handling charecteristics and the Viper is a handful. I like that aspect of it. I feel like I really have to control this car when I am driving it, not the other way around. I did get a taste of the rear end breaking loose on one turn with a bit too much "spirited" acceleration, I won't repeat that again.

One really apparent difference was the feel of the actual gas pedal. The Viper gas pedal has little perceivable resistance to it, the slighttest pressure and your reving the engine. The Vette had more resistance and you could almost rest your foot on it without reving the engine. Is the gas usually such a light pressure on the Viper?

The car never had the 998 recall frame work done. I have read through many posts on this, and some people have had nightmare experiences, I don't want to join them. Since I will never track this car, should I still get it done?

I will have many more questions for sure, but I am really happy to be here with fellow Viper owners. An interesting side note: The dealer I bought this car from is a well known Corvette specialist. They have 5 or 6 new C6's outside their building. When I was there looking at the Viper last wek, and when I picked it up this weekend, everytime a person pulled in and walked up to the door of the dealership they stopped, came over and looked at this Viper.

Most never took a second glance at the new C6's on the lot, but had to get up close to this car.

That really sold me on it!

Congrats...

I'm guessing the Blue one was at Land Rover in Smithtown and the Red one at Ramp Chevy.

The Blue one is a P.O.S. Good choice.

John,
Congrats and Welcome! :2tu:
The smile wont stop for years! I still smile every time I get in my 94! :D

When you get ready, give me a call and I can explain the Recall to you. To date I've done 137 and had to fix 17 from other Dealers [so far] that scewed them up.

Bingo on the red one I purchased, TwinVipers. The Blue one was at Porsche of Huntington, but there are so few around it was probably the same car. I think I made the right choice. That blue sapphire color is gorgeous but the car was beat up.

Thanks everyone!

Porsche and Land Rover are owned by the same people. The Blue Viper I was going to buy and put in my showroom in Smithtown. They sent it to the auction and it got returned for drivetrain noise. They now put White stripes on it and are trying to sell it again.

Too bad you weren't on the board sooner. I might have been able to get the Red car at a better price for you. Either way, you did good on the choice.

Now come down to Captree on Sunday mornings...

To many Vettes, I totally agree. A dime a dozen if you will. Get used to the looks and gawkers, they will come out of the woodwork to look at your car. When you see a Vette, which you undoubtably(?) will, do what I do, park next to it and post on this forum what happens! We all know what will happen and that is people will walk past the Vette and be drawn like a magnet to the Viper. Good choice on a TRUE american sportscar. Welcome. :D

Funny that you should mention the feel of the accelerator pedal. I had EXACTLY the same issue. I evolved from an XKE and I deliberately had the throttle linkage sprung to allow me to rest my foot on the pedal. I liked it better on the track (with all the jostling) and on long drives. All that I can tell you is that, over the first 1-2 thousand miles, you will grow accustomed to the change. I promise you that you soon won't notice it at all...you WILL notice the difference in torque however!

As for your recall AND ANY OTHER MAINTENANCE ISSUES, if you learn nothing else about owning a Viper, learn this: 914 763-3136. That's Chuck Tator's phone number. I CAN'T EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH! Drive the extra 50 miles from LI to Westchester (it's a nice drive anyway). Chuck will make your ownership experience a pleasure! Really, I'm NOT kidding! Accept no substitute.

Re: New Viper owner who can\'t stop smiling

congrats on your new purchase!!! best of luck. please become familiar with your car before "pushing it". it is quite a bit more powerful than a z06, and handles very different. dont be scared of it, just get to know it well first. its a great car if you truly enjoy driving. the person i got my car from never tracked it ( actually he rarely used it) but still he did the recall. i understand its a big job requireing you to leave it for a few days. enjoy the new ride!!!!

ViperJon: I just sold my Z-06 and got my ACR. The accelerator on the Viper IS way more sensitive than on the Corvette. You'll get used to it. Trust me!

I have been going down to Captree and Oak Beach for a long time, just one of the many Vettes down there. Talk about a dime a dozen! Last week there were maybe two Vipers and 100 Vettes. I like being in the exclusive club much better..
