Just picked up my 1st Viper. Sapphire blue over cognac. I’ve been an huge fan for +30 years, so quite happy to finally own one and be part of the “club”.

The car didn’t come with much in the way of a service history, so I’ll be going through it this spring/summer. From what I know it’s basically all stock. Engine seems quite healthy. Temps were rock solid and strong oil pressure…granted this was observed at 30deg air temps.

Immediate concerns are: secondary hood release seems frozen, parking brake (basically non functional even fully pulled up) and a clutch engagement point that seems way too high. I think I’ve found old posts that help with those issues. If I have additional questions after I dig in, I’ll ask.

I’ve only driven the car about 25mi and now have it in storage (single digit temps right now around here + salt on the roads) and only really got one good pull in. Did a ~5-75mph run that seemed to take about 10sec. No tire spin or clutch slip. Felt a bit slower than I expected (like 350hp from my butt dyno). I recently test drove a basically new 2016 Challenger Scat Pack 6MT which I’d guess have a similar hp/lbs ratio and Challenger felt noticeably faster to me. It could be I didn’t get Viper throttle all the way down (still getting a feel for the pedal travel)? Or maybe the throttle cables have stretched over time and aren’t opening all the way? Maybe the Viper gearing is a lot longer? In any case, I will get it sorted.

Definitely looking forward to this summer!

Congrats on the new purchase and welcome to the community. If you are curious how a 2nd gen GTS stacks up against modern cars, I dropped a link to a great youtube channel. They boasted some of the best performance numbers new, and they are surprisingly capable cars by todays standards.

The Scat Pack m6 has 3:90 gearing (I owned one)…I’m sure your viper has the stock 3:07 gears (I own a 97). Yes my Viper feels slower because of the tall gears and the fact I’m running taller tires cuz of the 19 inch wheels (stock are 17 inch). That makes the overall gear ratio even taller which makes the acceleration slower.

welcome to the fold. what posts did you find for high clutch engagement point? Mine is pretty high too, have not tried adjusting it yet, hoping it does not need replaced. if anyone has pointers or a link to a clear write up let me know.

Thanks for the info guys.

New gearing might be in my future. Also, thinking back the floor mats were sliding around so they may have restricted full throttle too.

The clutch pedal engagement point is at like 90% released. I haven’t found anything specific yet in how/if it’s adjustable. I’m hoping I don’t need a new clutch because otherwise it feels fine. I’ll check the “birdcage” while I’m down there.

As soon as the weather breaks a bit I’ll get some photos.
