It's time for me to drain and replace the oil in the rear axel/diff.

The owner's manual tells me what kind of oil to use, but not how much I will need. I'm going to use Mobil 1, rather than whatever the dealer has, so I'm going to buy the oil myself. Problem is, I don't know how much to buy.

Does anyone know how many quarts I will need to replace the oil in the rear axel/diff?

Thanks

Kai

Don't do that.
Buy OEM, they use the best and you'll have 50 opinions on other things to test out. I wouldn't mess with it.
For my 95, there is a 4oz friction additive and then the fluid.

Amsoil is what I've used for 9 years in Vipers, and does not require a friction additive, when using there SER. 2000

What ever you use, don't forget the weight is 75w-140 or wide range, not 75-90. It may be called 80w-140

I have to say the Amsoil company makes the best products in the world when it comes to lubricants.

Castrol Syntorque is what the car comes with, and I would find it hard to believe they are making a better oil than Amsoil. It's twice the price for Castrol, so there's one reason to switch.

Hi Kai,

04 Manual says 41 ounces of fluid and 4 ounces of friction modifier, total 45 ounces. The guys at Unitrax recommend and use Amsoil with the friction modifier. Don't forget that, or your hydrolock may go sideways. LOL.

I looked in my 04 manual and couldn't find that information anywhere. Do you have a page number?

I had it changed today. I brought in 3 quarts of axel oil. The dealer said they used 2 and 3/4 quarts of axel oil plus the friction modifier. That would be 88 fluid ounces of axel oil, more than twice what the manual says? They charged me $59 to drain and re-fill the axel (using oil I supplied) and charged me an additional $12 for the friction modifier. Charged an additional $39 to check my brake pads.

All in all, it seems a bit steep. Don't think I will be going back to that dealer again.
