What kind of coolant is used on the '97.? I assume the brown/red type as is used in the newer cars? Where do I check the level at? (New owner here with no owners manual yet). Where do you add the coolant? Thanks all. I am running at the mark just before the 250 degrees (3/4 of the gauge) in traffic, is that about right? I noticed that 195 is in the center of the gauge, and 3/4 kinda worries me, or is this normal with the A/C on in traffic? I just wanted to check the coolant level, and make sure what type of coolant to purchase. Thanks all...Mike

Look HERE for your answers. Very detailed write-up courtesy of JonB. Coolant is the typical green stuff like Prestone, 50/50 mixture. As for as the engine temp running on the high side, its the nature of these beasts. In addition to "burping" the system, some have had success with:

-Adding a bottle of Redline Water Wetter.
-Going to a 180 thermostat
-Drilling holes in the thermostat
-Aftermarket radiator
-Upgraded fan
-Front facia modification kit from Sean Roe

I'm sure there are more, just can't think of them. You don't want it running too cold. According to tom f&lgor, our resident fuel and oil expert, the oil has to reach a certain temp in order to burn off moisture (or something like that). Good luck.

Sounds like your system needs to be burped. Or you're revving too high. Keeping the RPM under 2000 will bring the temp down, no need to go higher RPM in traffic anyway.

I use green Prestone.

Fill/check bottle is that plastic bottle on the passenger side.
