at a place like limerock or pocono i guess i can use an open face helmut right?

I gotta think it would be more comfortable than the full face im used to.

if u buy your helmet from out of state (no sales tax), the next series of rating(dates) comes out this fall(snell SA rating) if you can borrow or use someone elses and wait to buy till then your helmet will last for years longer(yes they are perishable)

Not totally true as the SA rating is only for 5 years from mfg date. That way you never have an old SA rating or a helmet older than 5 years. An SA2000 helmet will be good as long as a SA2005 (assuming both are bought in the fall).

That assumes of course that the track actually checks the dates (or even the rating). Belts also are perishable and have a 2 year life I believe.

Phil:

Open face is generally considered OK for auto-x. For the track, you should have a full face helmet. It's not required...but it's YOUR head!

Actually Plum -the SCCA now says the open face in a closed cockpit car with airbags is safer then closed .They say the airbag catches on the chin of a closed face and pushes it up or down and can lead to injury. I still run with closed but its something to think about.
