I have a clear coat peeling problem with my wheels and the dealer has agreed to have them stripped and re-cleared. I called the wheel repair company and the owner told me the wheels will look best if I have them stripped and highly polished but not clear coated. He said they would require a little more maintenance (polishing/waxing)without the clear coat but the shine would be deeper, almost like chrome. Has anyone ever tried this? Is the look that much different? Is it worth the extra effort? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I polished a set of Porsche wheels awhile back. Unless you want to constantly polish them, go for the clear coat. You are correct they look better when you first polish them, but the constant upkeep will wear thin real fast. My recommendation is to clear coat them.

They do look better but you have to ask yourself do you enjoy polishing them, if not get the CC.

Option #1.

As previously stated, clear coat them or polish your fingers to the bone!

Option #2.

I got tired of cleaning mine and had them chromed. Very low maintenance, brake dust washes off much easier with the spray on / hose off cleaner (Griots wheel cleaner).

Look better too.

Thanks. I've been told there are polishes/sealers that keep the un-cleared wheels looking good for a longer period of time. I think one product is called Zoops. Do any of these products really work better than others? If I could keep the wheels shining without polishing every week, I think I'd like the polished look. Comments? Thanks for the input.

I spoke with the Zoops guys the other day about the applicability of their sealer on some polished mags on my 4x4 van. Their coatings will scratch if not washed properly and will wear off in 2-4 years, when you have to polish and then re-seal with their product. I use a polisher attached to an air drill on these wheels and it still takes about 2 hours to polish all 4. It's by far the least enjoyable task around my garage . I encourage you to clear coat and spend the polishing time driving.

I had my wheels striped then chromed. This is in my option the best way to go. Very low maintenance and great looks.
