I'm looking at these. Will 3" inches really make a difference?

Yes people have switched to a later Gen2 fan. Some rewired a separate relay from the fuse box because of some boxes has 'melted' at the relay.

Did you end up upgrading? Which one did you use and how did it turn out?
I did not. I had a conversation with Cory G @ Viper Parts USA and we decided that it does not make sense without also upgrading the radiator. My goal was to reduce idle temps.

These engines were designed to run right around 200F in light duty and it is well within their design envelope to run up into the 230's on hot days with heavy loading.

For anyone who is looking into this, the OEM gen 2 is pretty much unobtanium. My 99's went out last month and I spent a week sourcing through a bunch of used ones for $500-1100. The only OEM style one available new was $1400 plus shipping. If you haven't done radiator yet(I had) it may be more cost effective to build a custom unit for both.
