Yes people have switched to a later Gen2 fan. Some rewired a separate relay from the fuse box because of some boxes has 'melted' at the relay.

So does a GEN2 assembly fit directly into a GEN1 ?

There is a couple of slight modifications necessary, but small like trimming and only using the outside mounting points.
