The red brake covers are ready. I also have the covers in black.

The pre-orders for red will ship Wednesday.

Brake Covers

They fit on non-ABS rear calipers only, meaning 1992-2000. If someone with a 2001 or 2002 can send me a throw-away rear brake pad, I will play with it. If something works, you get first set at half price.

If you have questions, a PM automatically bumps to my email.

Please post when they are available for 2001 ABS! :headbang:

Yeah I might be interested in the abs caliper covers too.

An ABS version would look the same except for a fifth allen head in the middle along the top edge. I need a sample brake pad to play with because the only reasonable attaching method will require replacing the existing rivet on the brake pad that holds the anti-rattle spring. The replacement part would then hold both the anti-rattle spring and the brake cover. Send me a PM if you have an old pad or two...

Where are all the non-ABS folks that wanted red? I'm ready!

Dave, you mind if I use that picture? Nice!

Kmrumedy, shipping to Canada is US$11. Simply PM me an address and they go out the following day with a self-addressed envelope to mail me a check. I'll put a stamp on it if you tell me how much it should be for airmail back to US! Or paypal - your choice.

Shipping to rest-of-world is $13. The US Postal Service box is flat rate, so same shipping if you combine orders. Up to 8 sets fit in a box - ask Nigel!

Same offer to anyone else reading this - as long as I recognize your VCA forum screen name you get next day shipping. If not, I'll get back to you for an "interview!"

Tom, as the pads wear won't it put stress on the cover possibly causing it to crack or affect performance?

Chuck, the performance of the cover will be unaffected. It will simply take on the lovely patina of brake dust. :crazy2:

The brake pad backing plate is 0.190" steel while the cover is 0.065" aluminum. The aluminum cover is held 7/8" away from the backing plate so any flex or heat expansion will be absorbed by the long stand-offs. The attaching hardware is stainless steel with castle type friction nuts so they won't loosen with heat, vibration, or age. There are several hundred covers in use with no reporting of problems of any kind (other than foreign countries not have the needed English size allen wrench.)

OK, so I will offer a 5 year, 150,000 mile guarantee* that if any brake cover exhibits stress related cracks, I will replace them for free. If you have purchased within the last 90 days, please fill out a registration form at Contact or Purchase

* Excludes covers that have been modified to redirect cooling air to brake caliper for use in racing. :drive:

Well, the response I am getting indicates I was too subtle and you took me seriously. :omg:

No problem, I will keep my word. And to continue the sales pitch, anyone with brakes covers more than 90 days old can sign up for the guarantee program for only $25+shipping. (Now we'll see who is reading the fine print...)

My point wasn't so much heat as it was with pad wear. As the pad wears and the backing plate moves further away from the caliper wont the backside of the cover come in contact with the caliper? Or maybe you've allowed enough distance?

It's actually the other way, since there is only one piston (on the differential, inwards side of the caliper) and the cover is attached to the brake pad backing plate on the non-piston, outer side.

The covers are attached to the backing plate of the outer pad. The outer pad backing plate and the ugly casting "fingers" are what you see through the wheel spokes. So while the pad wears, the backing plate stays in the same place relative to the casting/caliper. In other words, looking through the wheel spokes, you can't tell if the pad is worn or not because you always see the casting and the backing plate (touching each other.) And it's always ugly duckling looking.

As the pad wears, the outer pad backing plate moves closer to the rotor, but is still positioned same relative to caliper "fingers". As the pad wears, the caliper body moves closer to the differential. As the pad wears and the piston sticks out, it is exposing itself only to the inner side of the rotor. Overall, as the pad wears, the cover moves toward the differential and away from the wheel spokes.

Geez, Chuck, I'm disappointed. Made those covers special for you... stop arguing and put 'em on!

These are an awsome product. I picked up a set of the black ones for my GTS over last winter. They add a nice touch to it. Nothing but good comments from them.

Nope, nothing sinister, just waiting for someone to send me brake pads I can use to make the new attachment parts. The old pads can be just that - old ones you took off. PM me if you got 'em.
