For what this is worth, I'm going to pass on what I consider to be some very reliable info, given to me by a good friend, who is a VERY serious, professional drag racer, and a chemical engineer.

He runs it in HIS competition vehicle, and tells me that virtually ALL of his peers also run the Royal Purple.... um, even those who may be sponsored by another major oil company.

Why? Yes, it's because their engines DO make measurably more horsepower with it. This friend of mine launched into a bunch of chemical jargon I had no clue about, but we eventually got down to a concept I could understand, whereby the actual "blow by" or mist created in the engine, actually "enhances" combustion in the cylinder. Sounds pretty good, right?

Well, the rest of the story is that he claims it's only good for a day's worth of runs, and must be changed beacause the effect goes away and the lubrication properties begin to deteriorate rapidly. He recommended that I absolutely NOT run it in my Viper for the long periods of time involved with normal street driving or weekend track events. But if I wanted to trailer my Viper to a drag strip for a day..... go for it, and it could be worth as much as 4-5 extra hp in my Viper.

Again, this is third party info, but it's from a guy I trust and who "knows", and I would believe everything he tells me about drag racing. My 2 cent contribution.

Wing is correct, Most of the oils that are thinner, and slippery break down and you have to change the oil more often and keep a close eye on it. I have used Leading Edge and it gives more HP, but I have to change the oil more often.

I probably didn't hear Bill right. I tend to hear only what I can digest, which is about 10%. Anyhow, I've changed oil @200(Mobil 1), 700 (Purple), and 1200 (Purple).

Would like to know for sure if I should quit using it. Probably go back to Mobil 1 anyway SOON.

maybe the peformance loss characteristics are for racing engines using the royal purple racing oil?

would changing out the royal purple every 3,000 miles be frequent enough?

would using this oil jeopardize the regular or exteneded warranty?

I use it. Did so because the gread God Bill Pemberton recommended it. I don't race or put it on a track (yet?). I've got 1700 miles and doesn't burn any oil that I can tell. Bill told me it is far slippery than other oils, and has been proven to be far cleaner at oil changes (which I guess means less wear??).

I do whatever BP tells me, including ordering a 2003.

Dear Frank n Stein,
The only reason you probably only got 10% of what I mentioned ,is that you had your last name filled up too much that evening we talked, ha. Just kidding , and I didn't mean to start a firestorm, but everything everyone has said has some validity to it. The RP you are using is made for the street and does not breakdown as suggested earlier, quoting the guys that are dragracing. I am not disputing his comments, but suspect he is using a Racing Version of RP and it does lose effect after a while. I also agree with the last comment, since Mobil 1 is readily available and is good stuff too. I use the same 10-30W you are using and it works great. The store , coincidentally uses Valvoline Synthetic 10-30w in all our customers cars, so as you can see there are numerous quality choices. Sounds like you might have a great source of RP close by, so happy motoring.

When I can find it I use Royal Purple. My Viper runs noticeably better when I use Royal or Red Line. The Royal Purple seems to help my Viper run a little cooler. For some reason, if I use Mobil, my car burns the hell out of it?

I compared Royal Purple to Mobil One at a track specifically to test thier ability to maintain pressure during cooldown. I had been told about it's recovery abilities by the fellow that had worked on my car but wanted to see for myself. First I had the stock oil gage (along with the water fuel and battery) replaced with AutoMeters. Using the stock gages for such a comparison
would have been akin to trying to drive with a bag over your head, the information you need won't get through. Then fresh Mobil One and off around Gran Sport Speedway in Hitchcock for some hot laps. I recall the day as warm, 80-90's with high humidity, the engine spent it's time between 240 and 250 degrees. Once off the track after two miles of cooldown the Mobil One sat at 4-6 lbs. of pressure during idle requiring the motor to be reved to get it to register above 10 lbs.. Another track session and the same results. Then a fresh change of Royal Purple Racing 41. After the same treatment it never went below 18 lbs. and recovered to normal static pressure much faster than Mobil One. If David or John or any of the other guys that were at the track that day wish to comment and add their recollections I hope they will do so. This was about two years ago and I may have left out something of interest.

I used the RP after that at every track event and never heard my lifters even as the cars of those around me were knocking from the heat. I always changed it out at the end of the day and ran Mobil One religiously on the street but have no reservations about recommending RP for days when the driving is going to get intense.
