For Sale: Two piece wheels 18x10 and 18x13 off of my ‘98 GTS in perfect condition and carry Viper spec Michelin Pilot Sport tires with a lot of tread remaining, though there is some sidewall cracking due to age. Included are the original BBS finished lug nuts. I bought the wheels from new and they have never been tracked or raced and have only 7,000 road miles. Located in San Diego area. $4500.
Not sure how to read the date code but it pretty much doesn’t matter since the tires were mounted in 2000, so I don’t think you’d want to be driving very far on them.
For future reference, right along the bead where it meets the wheel youll see "DOT" stamped with three sets of numbers following it. (For example - random picture from web, not viper specific: ) The first is Manufactures code (In this case "M5" is Michelin Kentucky Planet and "DO" is the tire type so its a passenger tire made in KY for Michelin,) the second is the tire dimensions and rating (here "L8M" are the dimension codes and "X" is speed rating) and the last is the date code ("5008" is week and year of manufacture,) or in this case December 8-13, 2008.
Thanks, Bonkers. So here are photos of the four tire codes. Some were on the inside and some on the outside. So just as a matter of academic interest, you can see that the sidewall cracking only appears on the outside. My guess due to UV exposure, while the insides are like new. And while there is much tread remaining, as I mentioned above, I wouldn’t recommend driving on the tires.
Sorry, forgot, Pre-2000 were 3-digit codes, but they follow the same pattern: (since the tire did not exist in the 1980's) 278 - June 29-July5, 1998 268 - June 22-28, 1998 517 - Dec 15-21, 1997
Miniguy, I have a mint front BBS 18 X 10 I'd sell you for $300.00 Located in Dana Point. Reach out i interested, Mike [email protected]
Tires are completely worthless , so the sale is essentially for the rims only. Good luck on the sale, though I would keep in mind that buyers will primarily be owners of Gen 1 and Gen IIs and due to the ability to pick up later Generation rims for less, your sale may be somewhat limited. Definitely would look great on a Gen II ACR , though.
Yes, agree about the tires but isn’t it interesting that the inside sidewalls look fine compared to the outside sidewalls. You could say it’s the combined action of UV and ozone, but the car has been garaged almost continuously for years. So who knows?
Pretty common with old tires, yet just wanted to make sure you understood that someone would only be interested in the rims. You might consider chatting with someone at a Tire Company ( say Discount Tire ,etc. ) and see if you can get some empty rim boxes? Might not be too hard since they are 18 inch rims, and then by removing the tires you could ship by box to someone if they are not nearby? Just a thought.
