Stock Amps in trunk...ok to adjust?

I've got a '94 RT/10 and noticed that there are two amps in the trunk. I'd like to adjust them but the controls are set to "static" (I think) and there is a small steel plate screwed onto the switch to keep it from being moved to "adjustable" (or some such). Is there any danger in setting these amps to be adjustable and adjusting them? Is it possible they are set this way because the amps don't actually have the variable circuitry in them? Thoughts?

P.S. The car does not have the stock head unit.

My advice, change em. Go with US Amps on both sides, Rockford Fosgate 2 piece speakers on the doors (with positionable "eyeball tweeters"), and a pair of 6" Image Dynamics subs. The ID's are probably the best 6" sub out there, and the US Amps are killer. I put all that in my 94 and it sounds outstanding considering the limitations of the interior and trunk space.

Including the deck, it was probably around $3000. Worth every penny, though.
