The factory stripes do not come under the clear coat. If you want someone to put them under the clear coat it will cost more, however if you do them like the factory you will save money.

King Dodge (the dealer that painted on my stripes) said that their normal price for painting stripes a Viper was $1,200 for painting on just the stripes (color and clearcoat), and $2,200 for painting the stripes on including clearcoating all of the affected panels completely, which is how they did mine.
(I got a much better deal than that, they take care of me)

On a factory striped Viper...the stripes ARE under the clear coat. So, to make it look factory..you would indeed need to clear any panels that are striped. I'd bet that your dealer is suggesting vinyl stripes. Is it possible that this "stripe kit" on is for a Viper that has yet to be built? Stripes on my 2000 GTS were listed as $2500 on the monroney..maybe $1800 is dealer cost?

BW,

Contact John Hackett with Houston VCA. He knows of a paint shop that has done good work for him in the past and will stripe a GTS for about $1800 (clear coated). I need to get that information from him myself, as my GTS is due for side sill repainting because of the dreaded blistering paint syndrome.

BTW, be a little cautious of dealers in Houston and do your homework, there are only a couple Dodge dealers in Houston without bad repuations.

good luck

Are your stripes factory? The car I had before this one had factory stripes and the stripes were so thick that you could feel it with your thumb nail. It definitely was on the out side of the clear coat, because I had to remove the polish that would stick up next to it with my thumb. I have the invoice and dealer print out that states factory stripes (1998). Maybe they changed later on or the stripes are so thick that even with the clear coat on you can feel the edge.
