I haven't examined it thoroughly yet but it looks like the only thing that secures the cable in the firewall is a rubber grommet. I've got some ideas on how to secure it better than the stock setup but I was wondering if anyone else had this happen or if they had any ideas.

Fairly common...I keep a spare cable in my "supplies"...cost about $26.00 with VCA discount, by my recollection.

Chuck, happened to me this summer after a couple hours of Spirited Driving.
We were able to pull it back through the firewall and use a clamp to keep it there until the part came in. Easy fix.
But I too was surprised that it is just a piece of rubber keeping it in place! And the way we HIT the pedal, I am also surprised it lasted for 10k miles! :D
Strange feeling when you go to hit the gas and it is not there!

I'm on my 3rd one, It happens once a year. You can adjust the tension on this cable were it gets held down on the intake manifold. I have loosened it up some but still made sure the butterflies opened up all the way.

LOL!

Chuck,

This happens to all of our type A (personified) Viper owners. The best solution is to place a one inch thick block of wood behind the accelerator pedal to help keep you from driving WOT 95% of the time. :)

Thanks for the input. I guess I should be happy it lasted 78,000 miles. Gotta be a better way to hold it though. Seems a shame to toss a perfectly good cable just because the grommet was bad.

Usually it's just the retainer, Chuck. Call me if you have any problems finding one.

Chuck... most dentist carry them...Just look in your old sock drawer.

I think The Rubber Grommet is the some on all Throttle cables that Dodge makes. Had the same thing happen to me,and got the peace off of a Mini van cable. No need to replace the whole cable just carry spare Grommet's.

You are correct Larry. It is the retainer. Not sure how it is supposed to be attached though. Is there a part number for it?

You can scrounge around and find a grommet...but the one that Dodge sells is attached to a cable...as a bonus freebie !!!

Part number is 04763969...as printed on the Mopar package that I'm reading as I type.

This also happened to me at VIO6. A viper tech just cut open a large washer and wrapped it around the rubber base. Never a problem again. :2tu:
