Tire Pressure Monitoring System

I've done a search and it seems that many of you are partial to the SmartTire system that is available. How does it work and where is a good place to mount it? Does it "beep" if there is a problem or do you just have to visually look at the system to monitor pressure?

Right now I spend a few minutes checking the tires with a gauge. I do not have a problem doing this. It's just that I'm afraid that I will not detect a tire failure while I'm on the road. This happen to me a few months ago. I had no idea that I had a tire off of the rim until I smelled the wonderful odor of burnt rubber! Now every time I'm on the road and smell burnt rubber I panic have the urge to pull over and check my tires! It would be so much easier to glance at a display to put me at ease..

I have a SmarTire system in my car, and have installed another system in a customers car. as long as you connect it up to an "ACC" power source, it will only beep when its SUPPOSED to- driving the car, and a tire is goint flat. will also detect overheating of the tires. You program in the parameters that it will follow; temp deviation, pressure deviation, etc. It can also detect if a tire is actually going flat, while at the same time getting warmer and keeping itself inflated-(slow leak) by comparing the actual pressure VS. the temparature increases.

Best place to mount it is right on the dash, with velcro. run the wires right under the "step" in the dash- which is actually two peices. wire it in to the Cig lighter, or something of the like. DEFINATLY purchase the full function display that mounts right to the front of the unit. it is what tells you all of the info, and alows you to make adjustments.

I bought 4 smarttire systems for my vehicles and in short hate them.

In my BMW one came loose and caused an absolute nightmare. They aren't where they need to be from a reliability perspective.

Just today, I was looking at a catalog which sold valve stem caps which display the tire pressure on the head. They turn yellow when pressure drop 4 psi or red when pressure drops 8 psi. Looks like an easy way to check tire pressure at a glance, of course, no help while driving. Saw them @ www.improvementscatalog.com.

NCVCA- Yes, we had one instance of a sensor comming loose, but it was determined to be the result of a faulty strap, cold weather, and wheel hop. It caused no damage besides a ruines sensor and strap, but SmarTire footed the bill for it.

The big benefit to the SmarTire system over the Schrader system is the temparature capability of SmarTire. It is very helpful not only in determining a problem with the tires, but also alignment issues. Lastly, it also can tell you when its "safe" to drive your Viper like its SUPPOSED to be driven.
