Transmission Problems

As of a week ago my transmission started grinding while going into 5th gear. Once in 5th, it would only go half way in (but enough to mesh the gears). If I let off the gas it would go all the way forward, but as soon as I get back on the gas the shifter pushes back and will pop out if I am not holding it. As for 6th gear, I can no longer get it in, it will just grind and never go in.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

5th/6th Syncro is gone gone. Mine did the same thing. Went with an 06 tranny that I picked up from Woodhouse. Your options will include: rebuild (costly), new (costly), or do some hard searching and you can find a great deal out there.

Do a thread search. There are several trusted and recommended sites for tranny replacements and rebuilds. PM me if you have any specific questions. Also search threads I stated, theres a pretty detailed topic on my replacement I did.

Agreed, grinding into 6th gear has burred up the teeth and will not let the slider engage into 5th correctly.

Time for some major transmission work.

It's a bit of manual labor, but the rebuild is something you can do. The service manual for the T-56 is available online and if you run into issues, this site can help or the local Corvette T-56 rebuild shop can, too.

As Tom said, local shops do exist. Our guys have had great luck at RPM Transmissions, about 30 miles NE of Indy. They are indeed a ''Vette shop'' with considerable Corvette and Viper experience. Last guy had his T-56 beefed up, everything micropolished, and changed 5th and 6th gears changed to Aston Martin gears...about $2500.00 !!!!

Tman, what should a rebuild run on these ya think?

.
Depending on the damage Phil, if you (whomever) pulls it themselves 4-6 hundred bench labor plus parts. You could spend as little as 15-16 or a lot more.

So, if I am going to attempt to repair/rebuild this tranny myself, any pointers or parts in particular to replace regardless? So far, I'm thinking the 5/6 shift fork is done and as such will replace it and the others with steel forks. Any other ideas?

Thanks!

To be honest, take it out and bring it to a tranny shop. There were a lot of other problems once they tore mine down. Gears were fused together to shafts and lots of ground down teeth. Woulld have cost me a ton more to do a rebuild than get a replacement.

That just my opinion and suggestion.
